Lewisohn didn’t include anything that I didn’t already know, just another derivative Beatles bio.

Yesterday I had the thought… I wonder what cool new Beatles fact Lewisohn is uncovering today to put into the next book.

I do wonder what volume 2 is going to cover. Would it cover the rest of the band’s career up to the breakup and the proposed volume 3 cover everything up the date of publication? That’s how I’d do it, at least.
Or is there going to be a somewhat sharper divide, almost akin to what the Anthology CDs did in terms of the periods they covered?

Well, even that alone would be great! I’ll be proud to have all three in my collection, especially next to the Hunter Davies book, the Anthology book, and the Get Back book.

I’ve got about as much faith in seeing volume 3 getting released as I have in Paul completing his ‘Archive’ series. Volume 2 is due no sooner than 2023, which is a small maybe so who knows when volume 3 will see the light of day. As for the archive releases; are they still going, it feels like they started before the Beatles split? In two years time ‘BOTR’ turns 50 at which point the first archive release will be 12 years old! Are we even half way thru yet?

I don’t know what’s going on with the Archive series; I personally would’ve done certain parts better, like having things on disc, not the whole “digital only MP3 download” things. There’s certainly not a lot of rhyme or reason to some sets, like the Flowers In The Dirt set.
And I’m certainly aware that Lewisohn probably feels right now that he’s racing the clock to finish before he dies, that’s his greatest fear. Much like Ulysses S. Grant writing his memoirs, which he managed to finish only four days before he died.

Paul personally approves it. I cannot believe he listens to them tho as who the hell listens to a 10 second outtake of Paul fiddling with his guitar and thinks it should be included as a bonus track (see ‘Outtake III’, ‘Wild Life ‘ archive release).

Well, I’m sad to say that Paul doesn’t quite know how the process works or how best to utilize the Internet. I mean, I’m not surprised, I don’t think he spends a lot of time even using a computer. It would be better if he’d delegated more responsibility, and they probably would’ve made more sensible packaging.

It doesn’t feel to me that Lewisohn is driven by a fear of not finishing, I think Lewisohn should change his approach for both volume two and volume 3 to an ensure they do get finished, up to now he’s tried to turn over every stone and to take as long as it takes, but this is risking that they will never get done. I think he should now work to a timetable, he has done a ton of research, so they’ll still be very good books, but if he doesn’t finish his work it comes to nothing. I do worry that he’ll get caught up in useless byways of following up minutiae.

I’m planning on getting the book soon. Which version should I get, the standard or the extended one?
If you have the money for the extended, would definitely recommend getting the extended but as people have said before, you’re not missing out on anything by getting the standard. I have the extended edition on my Kindle but the standard as a physical copy.

He’s 63 years old; he has plenty of time left.

I haven’t read anything by Lewisohn yet, but I keep hearing the name. I had formed the impression that he is generally very well regarded as a historian, but he came up in an episode of the podcast One Sweet Dream the other day, and they accused him of supporting the anti-Paul narrative. I was very surprised. Would you say they’re being unfair?
My hot take is that after the Beatles split they went down the paths of spiritualism, solipsism, alcoholism, and Paul McCartney

Absolute rubbish, @meaigs. I have never seen anything in any of Lewisohn’s work that aligns him to being more supportive of one of the Gospels of John, Paul, George or Ringo than another, or particularly dismissive of any of them. His research does sometimes contradict their recall of events, but that is merely of memory not matching the paperwork.
The biggest argument against Lewisohn having an anti-Paul bias is that he has worked for Paul for several extended periods over the years, including editing the official (now defunct) Paul fanzine, Club Sandwich, as well as writing the liner notes for several of Paul’s archive releases.
Paul is often outspoken on those whose work he doesn’t like, and I’ve never heard him criticise Lewisohn.
