I want to get Ringo’s book, but I don’t have an iPad. But it sounds like it should work on your computer through iTunes?

As far as I’ve read online, it will only work on an iPad. As soon as I get home, I’m downloading it (I got the email telling me my pre-order is now available this morning right when I got to work).

I’m new here, & I’ll jump in with both feet! I REALLY want the Photograph book by Ringo, but I’m going to wait for the hard-copy book to come out in December. I like the idea of reading a book on my iPad, but I know I’ll want a book to keep. Ringo said that the eBook doesn’t contain all the pictures, & that some will go to a museum (can’t remember the name), some will be in the eBook, and more will be in the book being released in December. Since it’s being published by Genesis, though, the hard copy book may be cost prohibitive. At least the digital book is affordable at the price of $12.99. Anyone else planning on buying the book?

I’d rather have a proper book but it doesn’t seem that Genesis are planning to release one (yet). The December publication is a hand-bound signed limited edition that is likely to cost several hundred pounds. As with Postcards from the Boys , there will probably be a regular publication at some stage, but so far as I’ve seen no date for that has yet been set.

No, the version available from iTunes is usable on a computer.

Have you actually tried that? I copied and paste this directly from the iTunes description of the book:
“Requirements: This book can only be viewed using iBooks 3.0 or later on an iPad”
I’m curious whether it can be viewed on a desktop. In any event I spent quite a bit of time going through the first part of the book on my iPad last night and it is excellent, although I’m paying for the lost sleep this morning!

I haven’t tried it but I am going by this iTunes preview description, which contains the line: “This book is available for download on your iPad with iBooks or on your computer with iTunes.”

Well let me know if it works, because based on what it told me on my iPad when I preordered it (and how I interpreted it), I could download it either in iBooks or iTunes (to my purchased apps/books folder) but it would only play on my iPad. In fact, I did download the preorder on iTunes on my computer, but I then had to add it to my iPad (via iTunes) in order to actually view it. I don’t see why this book would work on iTunes on a desktop when every other ebook downloaded from iBooks does not. But like I said, I am only 99% sure, not 100% If you can get it to work on your computer, let us know!
EDIT: yes, it says you can *download* it via iTunes, but it also says it can only be *viewed* via iBooks and requires iOS 5 or later (and iOS is not available on anything other than iPhone/iPad/iPod), which is only available on iPad and iPhone (and this book is an iPad-only one). Curious to see if they’ve changed it just for this one.
BUT, Apple did announce on Monday that iBooks will finally be coming to Mac (right now it’s only available on iOS) so perhaps in September when iOS 7 is released, it can be viewed on a computer.

I was thinking last night it might be a matter of poor wording on their part – downloadable but not actually playable on one’s computer. I just don’t want to risk the $13 to find out.
I have to buy a used iPad for my portfolio anyway, so it’s just as well I do. So does iOS 5 work on first-gen iPads or would I have to buy a later version?

DO NOT buy a 1st-gen iPad. iPad 2 can run the newest software and will run iOS 7 when it comes out in September…the first-gen iPad is basically obsolete at this point in terms of what version of iOS it can run as well as apps (no one is writing apps or updating them anymore for iPad 1). I have an iPad 2, I’ve owned it 2 years and it’s still great so if you want to go cheap and get the oldest one, that’s the one I’d recommend.
And $14? It went up! I only paid $9.99 for the pre-order. Still worth it, though!

You bet! Like I said, if you want to save money, and don’t care about it not having a few of the latest (what I consider inessential) features of the newest iPad, the iPad 2 will be just fine. For what I do (read, surf, watch DVDs and stream videos, type, some work, Skype, etc) it’s worked flawlessly for me the past 2 years. And the features it doesn’t have, my iPhone has anyway (and I don’t need them on iPad) so you can save some money and still get a quality device.
Sorry for the tangent!
To make up for it, here are screenshots from a couple of pics (so far) that I’ve really liked in Ringo’s book:
These are from my Twitter account and I’ll be posting more as I go through the book (and I typically post a shitload of Beatles related stuff anyway), if anyone wants to follow me I’m @blackbookblur on there (and I’ll follow back!).

It really is, only wish it were longer but they’ve got to save something for the print version I guess . The audio and video bits for the pictures where Ringo fleshes out the story behind the picture are just great. Well worth the $9.99 for it!

A new book called The Beatles: The BBC Archives by BBC radio producer Kevin Howlett, who previously wrote The Beatles at The Beeb, will be coming out in October to coincide with the re-release of the Live At The BBC album. More at WogBlog:
The Beatles exploded into British popular culture in the 1960s and changed the face of music for ever. Central to this success were the BBC radio and television programmes that brought them from the clubs of Hamburg and Liverpool into the living rooms of an adoring public. The Beatles performed on countless BBC programmes, performing both their hit songs and rare cover versions of the music that inspired them.
In this landmark book, BBC producer and Beatles expert Kevin Howlett delves deep into the BBC archives to reveal hundreds of rare photographs and long-forgotten interviews that document the early rise, steady evolution and eventual split of the group. Uncovering additional archive documents such as early audition reports, audience feedback forms and internal memos from startled BBC executives, the files give a fascinating insight into the biggest band of all time.
Beautifully packaged and extensively researched, The Beatles: The BBC Archives is a definitive guide to a unique relationship between two cultural icons.
Reportedly, the main body of the book contains the surviving transcripts of the Beatles’ appearances on BBC Radio and Television from 1962 to 1970. Each interview transcript will be set in its historical context, with accompanying commentary by Kevin Howlett. Howlett’s commentary will be supplemented by rare photos of the Fab Four at the BBC’s studios, both onstage and off. The book will also feature memorabilia-album art; concert posters, flyers, and tickets, all from the BBC.
Sounds like something else to save up for.

Haha, yes it does! I saw that on Amazon a few weeks ago when I was trawling for something else and promptly added it to my wish list. I doubt I’ll get the re-released BBC disc…I have the original one, as well as the complete sessions on bootleg (10 CDs!) so no need. But the book, absolutely!
