This would have to be the book I took on to my Desert Island!
I still go back and revisit this from time to time and envy Lewisohn so much for having had the privilege of listening to all those recordings. I think he could have written more though (am I ungrateful or what?). You just cannot get enough information on this subject and some of the dates I feel he could have expanded upon. That said, I suppose time, space and cost all played it's part.
If any real Beatle fan hasn't already got it, then in my opinion this is THE ONE to get.

I've got to agree with you about this book. I bought it back in the late eighties when it came out and i have cherished it ever since (Even though its massive and its hard to find a bookcase to fit it on!) I have read it cover to cover many times but as you said about the chronicles book, its the kind of book you can pick up to look at for five minutes and still be reading it an hour later. I also agree about how lucky Mark Leiwsohn was to be able to sit and listen to the tapes of all those sessions. That must have been an incredible experience for him.
This is definitely my favourite Beatles book and the reason for that is its about whats important, the Music.which up until then just hadn't been written about much i don't think.
Onward my friends, and glory for the thirty ninth!!

Agree completely! I'm on my fourth time reading this and it never fails to fascinate…

It was first published in 1988. There’s a discography at the back which mentions the first CD reissues, but doesn’t talk about the mastering. This one’s really about the 1960s and 1970, and doesn’t have anything about Anthology or anything else from the 90s and beyond.
Although it contains edited (reduced) text from Sessions, Lewisohn’s book The Complete Beatles Chronicle (1992) contains corrections to the recording dates when new info came to light, such as the session for You Know What To Do, and the hi-hat overdub for Can’t Buy Me Love . I recommend you get both; second hand copies shouldn’t be too hard to come by.

When was this book written? Does it (or later revisions of it) contain information on the various CDs released?
Either way, I'm definitely buying this book… once I have some money and I can find it in a shop.

Not sure where you live, but Amazon should have page numbers and availability.

Wow, that's expensive. I saw a new copy in my local Borders before it closed down.
Have you seen these? condition=used
I wouldn't worry about them being slightly used. If your copy gets as much use as mine has a few creases here and there are nothing to worry about.

So, Joe – these are 2 completely different books; The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions and The Complete Beatles Chronicle?
One is not just an updated version of the other? I looked them up on Amazon, but seeing as the first one is 200+ pages and the later one is 300+ pages, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't buying redundantly.
Many thanks for your helpful input, as always.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.
If you have Chronicle you already have most of what's in Sessions. Sessions came first and has a bit more technical detail, more colour pics, quotations etc. It was combined with The Beatles Live! to make Chronicle, but some of the excess had to be taken out to make it more manageable.
I prefer Sessions, as I don't find it that interesting to read about The Beatles' live shows and TV/radio appearances. YMMV.

I bought this book at Amazon Germany last month- for 57€, and there were several good used copies available.
It is the bible for every hardcore Beatles fan. Stll, although I absorb every single line, I must say I was a little bit disappointed; I wish Mark Lewisohn would have taken more time and effort to document detailed instrumentations. Who plays which instrument in which part; who plays rhythm/lead guitar. Musical details, stuff which is interesting for guitarists. Sometimes he does provide these details. But maybe I am asking too much. Is there such a book?

Choking Smoker – check out Beatles Gear by Andy Babiuk. It doesn't detail the instruments used for every single song, but does go through pretty much everything they played on from the early years to 1970. It's a very good book. I think ML wrote the introduction, and explained that after publishing Sessions he got a lot of correspondence from people wanting to know about the instruments etc. Because that's not his field of expertise he was unable to write about it, but said Andy Babiuk's book filled in most of the gaps.
Necko – the Sessions book has never been updated as far as I know. Since it came out in the 1980s a lot of new information has come to light. I'm trying to incorporate as much as possible into my Beatles history section (currently complete up to February 1967).
