“Mach Schau, Beatles!”: Spencer Leigh's 'The Beatles in Hamburg'
In the book of transcribed in-studio chatter that accompanied the British box-set release of the Beatles’ ill-fated Dear-John letter, Let It Be , our lads squabble a lot about how the songs they are recording in a post-Pepper desire to return to their stripped-down roots should be debuted. Such venues as the Roman Coliseum and a luxury liner get tantalizingly tossed about, revealing the band still has a sense of occasion, if not grandiosity.

Spencer Leigh’s book on the Cavern was very good, and did contain quite a lot of info that’s not available anywhere else (not even Lewisohn’s Chronicle). I’ll be getting this, I think. He knows his stuff.
Spencer was also able to confirm for me that Ray Jones, who got in touch claiming he was Raymond Jones, was actually Raymond Jones. If you see what I mean. Helpful and knowledgeable.

I’m reading the Hamburg book at the moment. I think it’s very good – lots of little details I hadn’t heard before. Full review to follow.

I just finished it and enjoyed it. It was a quick read after I started ignoring all the little factoid sections that were interjected throughout the book. After I read all of the proper text, I went back and read all of those factoid sections separately. I enjoy his writing style and am just starting his book on the Cavern.
I’ll leave the full review to our resident expert reviewer. As Ringo would say, “Awwww rock on Joe for Zig, one time!”.
