I just read in Chuck Gunderson’s book Some Fun Tonight that when the Beatles played in Chicago in 1966 Mike Love and Bruce Johnston met the Beatles and played them “Good Vibrations” for the first time. Is this mentioned in any other book? It may be included in Mike Love’s new book but I have not got my copy yet.

I watched a great documentary about Pet Sounds which was recently shown in the UK for the 50th anniversary and I think they mention this. But it also has a Bruce Johnston interview where he says he went over to London in 1966 with a copy of Pet Sounds hot off the press which he played to The Beatles. Of course Good Vibrations was part of the same recording sessions but not on the album. I’m not sure which of these incidents would have come first.
I’ve heard the Chuck Gunderson books (parts 1 & 2) are really great and I need to add them to my collection.

The Beatles were in Chicago on 11-12 August 1966. They could only have been played an unfinished version at this time since the recording was being worked on until 21 September. Paul, and John to a lesser degree, was likely to have realised just what a leap forward it was.
Just as it was Pet Sounds that coloured the end of Revolver sessions after they heard it in May 1966, Good Vibrations hung over their ambition of what they wanted to achieve soundwise by utilising the studio as another instrument. I’m almost tempted to suggest that Penny Lane is Paul’s reply to Good Vibrations, at least sonically, more than it’s his response to John’s SFF.

That’s been on my list for awhile but I already have too many oversized books.
The size is really the only bad thing about the book…lovely to look at that size, but a drag to store on the shelf!
