Every month I get a fair number of offers of books for review. I tend to turn them down as I don’t really have time to read each one cover-to-cover (which I think is only fair), formulate some reasonably cogent thoughts, then put them down on screen.
So I thought I’d try opening it up a little. Would anyone here be interested in reviewing Beatles books for this site? I can’t guarantee you the next Lewisohn title, but others are being published all the time. There’s no money involved, but you will get a free Beatles book. I can credit you by name or leave it anonymous – your choice.
Serious applicants only, please. If you can’t commit to finishing a book then writing about it, please don’t put yourself forward. If you’re likely to just rewrite the press release, please don’t put yourself forward. If you can’t write… you get the picture.
Still interested? Leave your name here and I might get in touch by PM. I’ll ask for your name and address to pass on to the publishers, who should then send you the review copy of their book. In return I’d need a minimum of 400 words of considered criticism, written in a clear and informative way. Jokes optional.
PUBLISHERS!
If you want your book to be considered for review, please get in touch in the first instance by contacting me. Or if you want to sign up to this forum you can offer up a title here.

Questions (this isn’t me applying, just querying).
- How long is the time from getting the book to submitting the review (roughly speaking – obviously it will depend on the size of the book)?
- Does the individual get a say in the book they review or will one just turn up on the doorstep and that’s it? Obviously the individual cannot submit the books they want to review (ity’s not a shopping or wish list) but he/she wouldnt want to get stuck reading a book they have no interest in – even if it does have a Beatle link/theme?
- Is it allowable to try reviewing a book and then depending on how the individual finds it decline from doing another?
- Will any individual who takes up the option of book reviewing be able to seek feedback on the review before it is submitted for publication?

That’s my biggest question. If you were to allow my help I’d want to make sure I could read it all to write a good review.

Hi, good questions. I’ll answer them one by one.
- Publishers normally send stuff out 6-8 weeks before publication. If that’s the case it’s very helpful to have something published before the book comes out. Occasionally authors just want a bit of publicity for something that’s been out for a while, so the pressure’s off. I guess I’ll work with whoever’s reviewing a book and try to set some deadlines. It’s not normally the end of the world if a review is published a few days after a book’s release, but a month or more is probably a little too late.
- I’m not interested in giving people books they’d struggle to write about. What I might do is use this thread to say: “I’ve been offered X Title by Y Author. Does anyone want it?” It makes no sense to pair a Beatles graphic novel with someone who hates the genre. I would hope people only put themselves forward if they were serious about reviewing something – it’s bad form to be sent review copies and not to deliver, which is why I’ve been declining all book requests lately.
- Of course! It’s not a job, I’m not asking anyone to sign a contract requiring a certain number of articles. See above: I’ll ask around and see who’s interested before passing on details to publishers.
- Feedback from me? Sure. Actually, that’s a good point. I guess I should reserve the right to edit and amend as appropriate. That doesn’t mean I’ll butcher anyone’s work, but I will sub-edit it for grammar/structure if necessary. Happy to chat to people individually about this.
Also, in terms of copyright, you’d be granting me a non-exclusive licence to use your words on this site (non-exclusive means you can publish it elsewhere too if you like) in perpetuity. I’m not one for legal docs so I don’t want to get into contracts and terms, but in short: you’d write a book review which I’d publish in my Books section. You get to keep the book. That’s about it.
If anyone else has questions please let me know.

I would like to apply as well. I write reviews for my school’s bi-monthly magazine (which also includes films and gadgets reviews). I’ll read anything Beatles/solo Beatles that I can get my hands on! I also read at a fast-pace if that helps in any way

Yes, I would be interested too. I used to review DVDs on one of the local websites and had around 100 published reviews for which I received decent feedback. I have a few university degrees and have worked as a consultant presenting writing workshops to government agencies – so I can string a few words together when I need to. I am also ‘between jobs’ at the moment (aka unemployed) so I have (too much) time to read and write.

I’d definitely like to apply. I’ve been writing about hockey for a while (including some reviews of hockey video games/books), and I’ve always wanted to review books, my mom had a book review blog for a while and she often gave me the kid’s ones and asked to me talk about them. Anyway, I’d love to help, but if you’ve got enough help, that’s fine too.

Since we can do one and see how it works I’ll gladly help out if my assistance is needed. It’d be pretty fun and I’d make sure to write well thought out reviews. Who on here wouldn’t want the opportunity to get a free Beatles book before release? Even if there’s work involved.
PM me if I can help!
OK! This is great! I worried I’d scared everyone off by talking about rights, editing etc. So glad people are keen to do it.
I guess my next issue is how to manage it. Probably the easiest way is if I get email addresses for those who are interested, then send out details of book offers I get from publishers. Or maybe just offer them up here – perhaps I’ll create a private forum for reviewers. Whoever replies first gets the book, although if one person is dominating things I might ask them to give others a chance.
I don’t want to do it on a rota system in case someone gets lumbered with a book they really can’t connect with.

Stick me down to. Been giving it thought and with a deadline i know i will get it sent off, time management being my problem.
I’m actually happier knowing you can edit it Joe if you wish and i couldnt care less about the rights.
