I’ve heard very good tings about it but its $250 to buy and so way off my justification reasoning table when purchasing books. Thanks for your review and post tho.
I didn’t take into account the exchange rate…here it costs $150…still very pricey! It’s certainly a fantastic book, factually and visually. If you ever do get a chance, I highly recommend you pick it up. This one is one of the great Beatle books

@DrBeatle I love the blog and reading your book reviews. It’s one of my first stops before I go ahead and purchase a new book.
Just one suggestion, from a design stand-point: I would switch the colors in the content of your posts, so it’s black text on white background. In general, text content should be darker than its background, or it does weird things to the eyes. (I have to read your posts in short installments, or else I start seeing reverse-image-burn spots. )

Or if you are like me and prefer white on black I recommend going all the way with black on white or black on white or some other hard contrast.

Thanks for the suggestions and I will consider them…I’ve been mulling a re-design of some sort for a while now (time is the one thing eluding me in order to do it!).

Very good, but not great book (see reasons why in the review). I know @Joe has read this…anyone else?

I started, read a good couple of dozen pages, stopped, picked it up a number of weeks/months later, read a good couple of dozen pages, and keep continuing that loop as the lay-out is awful. Fascinating read, one of the best i’ve come across, buts its a nightmare to keep going thru. Someone needs to get their hands on it and break the chapters down; do that and i would rip thru the book.

Totally agree. By the time of the last two tours, which were much shorter (few concerts), it was alright but the third and fourth tours, which were very long and had chapters of 100 pages each, it became a bit of a slog. Other than that, the book really is fantastic. But I have to knock it down a few notches because of that.

Chuck Gunderson, author of the excellent books on the Beatles’ American tours “Some Fun Tonight” sat down with me for an interview to discuss his books, the tours, his collection of memorabilia, and more. You can read it here: http://rnrchemist.blogspot.com…..uthor.html
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed speaking with him!

Thanks, @Father McCartney hope you dug it!
My latest Beatles-related review (from last week) is Peter Carlin’s bio on Paul: Paul McCartney : A Life –> http://rnrchemist.blogspot.com…..-life.html
Much lighter and less in-depth than Sounes’ book Fab (which I reviewed last year) but MUCH more enjoyable. If you’re only gonna read one Paul bio that covers his entire life, this is the one I would go for. Anyone else read it?

How so? I get quite a few people telling me this but then I get lots of people telling me it’s not an issue. I’ve been mulling over a re-design for a while so any feedback is helpful!

The white lettering on the black background makes light and dark stripes in my eyes. Like when you look at something bright, and you have a funny spot on your eye, only this is in stripes.

I concur, it would be a better move to ditch the background image and go for a reasonable contrast background to your text, makes it much more accessible.

Maybe have an options to switch what contrast you like better since I am one of the few people who likes a dark contrast better.

I am considering a redesign to make it much cleaner and more minimalist, similar to how Joe has it here (obviously not copying his style, I just meant clean and crisp). When I find some time to actually sit down and do it, of course…(therein lies the rub!)

Not a perfect book, but very nice and fun…a charming overview of his drawings and artwork. Anyone here read it?

Yes, another talent for Mr. Lennon.
Interestingly, McCartney has also painted (I have a book of his paintings)- and this is even less well known than Lennon’s art.
Lennon’s work IMO is comical while McCartney’s is abstract.
