I love the Anthologies. The only thing that I’d change about them, though, is that I’d put less live material on it.Not sure what it is, but I never give them much of a listen for some reason. Other than the unreleased songs I plucked from there of course, but on a regular basis, I just don’t give them the time of day.
I guess I’ve collected sooooo many Beatles bootleg CD’s over the years that I just don’t care for it anymore.
Must make an effort!
Well, bootlegs are the main reason why I think there’s too much live material on the Anthologies. There’s so much interesting stuff on bootlegs that I would gladly substitute for all those uninteresting live tracks.
The anthology discs are a companion piece to the book and the TV series, so the live tracks are complementary to them as well.
Well, I’m not exactly saying “that’s the way it should be.” I’m saying something closer to “If I did it, this is the way that I would do it.”

I’ve been listening to the anthologies again lately after re-watching the show and my overriding feeling is that there is not 3 double CDs worth of unreleased beatles stuff out there worth getting. In the vast amount of cases the best stuff went on the records, sure it’s interesting to hear some of the alternate takes and rarer material but it’s not something that you are going to be rushing back to on a regular basis.
The second volume is by far the best, mainly because the group were experimenting most in the studio at that point but i still think the best stuff from these records should have been added as bonus tracks to the reissued albums with perhaps a separate double cd release for singles and b sides.
For such a huge band the catalog has long been a bit of a mess.

The only reason why I put off the first volume for so long is because it sounded too much like a historical document rather than an interesting collection of rarities and outtakes.

Offline I’m glad they didn’t add bonus tracks to the albums. I like to hear just the album when I pop in a CD. Maybe if they did it like the Paul McCartney re-releases, with a second disc of rarities. But yes, I agree there is too much filler on the Anthology sets.

I can’t imagine what my precious albums would be like with b-sides tacked onto the ends and things like that. Sure, maybe they should have indcluded them in the first place, but since they didn’t… DONT!

Offline Fair enough, but when the original “Please Please Me ” is on a CD and only takes up what 25 or so minutes in total , i don’t see why they couldn’t have added some bonus stuff on there much like the excellent byrds remasters.
Also the live stuff on volume 2 backs up the bands decision to quit touring.

But it’s a special kind of filler, It’s Beatles filler! even 12-Bar Original has its moments.

Offline This should be reissued/redone with the whole thing fixed, getting rid of the crappy edits, mixes, hodgepodges etc. They have ‘fixed’ ‘FAAB’ and ‘RL’ on ‘1+’ and ‘LATBBC’ was redone to remove the cross fades.

I personally like the cross-fading, mixes and edits. At that time, the general public wouldn’t have been as willing to hear virtually every song have more than one representation, for example, there wasn’t as much interest as a whole, outside of pure Beatles fans, to hear all the different parts and takes of A Day In The Life , like there would be on the Sgt. Pepper 50th anniversary box set. So give the people a representation of a greater whole to satisfy the casual listener.
I think they also are illuminating in their own way. Yes Take 7 of Strawberry Fields Forever is the same on Anthology 2 and the Sgt. Pepper box set, as it is, but having the edit piece of Ringo’s drum track on Anthology 2 really adds something, especially to appreciate how good Ringo is. I also like the outtakes remix of The End as the last track on Anthology 3 , especially with the added on remix of the ending chord from A Day In The Life , going backwards, then forwards again. It’s a perfect way to signal that this really is the closing of the whole thing, there’s no more.
I think the Anthology albums and the box set releases complement each other fully, one doesn’t invalidate the other.
That said, if there is another rendition with pure takes of songs and removing certain material to make way for other stuff that definitely hasn’t been released at all to the public before, I’ll be first in line to buy it!

Offline I like the Anthology albums, the 2nd being my favourite and for me it has become an album a listening experience, it’s the Beatles in a casual setting a montage of material and I like that it was curated under the authority of the remaining Beatles.
Anthology 2 has the sense of invention, it’s a different look a different facet to the band a peak behind the scenes, but ultimately I can put it on turn down the lights and listen through the whole thing and go on an interesting journey.
I am starting to warm to Anthology 3 and Anthology 1 has some standout tracks but I haven’t accepted it as a continuous listening experience. This may yet happen.
I once saw some speculation that in the future the Beatles might just be known by some of their most popular songs, but I suspect that their classic status as the 20th Centuries greatest composers will just grow and all of their recorded work will become open and intensely curated in detail and presented in a wealth of different ways. In the meantime I love the way additional material is emerging both as bootlegs and official releases.
I do think they should release the complete Decca tapes as an album, it is such an important chapter, sure it’s wobbly but it is listenable and can be enjoyed and I think it works as a stand alone document.
I’m really pleased the Esher Demos was released as a stand alone disc with the White Album remix
The BBC recordings are such an essential addition to their legacy and gives a strong sense of what they were like as a live band without the screaming.
Back to the Anthology releases though, I am very glad they did them and as time goes by they feel more and more like albums in their own right, they’re from a time when Paul, George and Ringo got together again, maybe with a certain strain, they created two new tracks from John demos (I’m in the prefer Free As A Bird faction) and they told their story as a TV series and agreed to release this material, that can’t happen again, they are a part of Beatles history and I love them for that.

Offline I find the Anthologys’ most interesting aspect is the songs that were not previously released, so in that sense they get less compelling as they go along, but there are some cases of changes in the final versions that stand out. Like Mean Mister Mustard’s sister was originally named Shirley, presumably changed to Pam to imply that she is Polythene Pam . But, in hindsight, it’s obvious that the two-syllable name scans better.
