Untrue. Some rap is computer generated sound. Many rappers today have high production value with strong musicians writing the beats and real players playin gon the track. Just like the blues, it is an important form of expression.

That’s what rap is for the most part @The Hole Got Fixed although there are a few rap songs where they used actual instruments, but the ratio of rap songs made with samples to rap songs with original instrumental parts is about the same as the ratio of Beatles non-instrumentals to Beatles instrumentals. Also, rap isn’t the only genre of music that lacks instrumental and vocal talent, there’s also EDM (electronic dance music) which is an entire genre of music dedicated to taking samples and messing around with them, people called DJ’s who operate turntables and mess around with pieces of music, beat makers who make beats using a drum machine for rappers, as well as possibly make very simple basslines or keyboard parts on occasion.
Then there’s modern pop music, where actual drums are as extinct as meanmistermustard’s childhood Commodore 64 and all drums are recorded using a drum machine, most instrumentation is created using a synthesizer, vocals are often treated with autotune, and if there is a guitar part, it is very basic.
If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

Frank Oceans album Channel Orange disproves all of this. Your statements are completely false. Now that rap songs are frequently chart toppers, the best musicians are hired to play in the studio, with top notch singers backing the famous rappers or singing the hooks. You may not like the genre, but the talent that works on the music is no less exceptional.
Of course, you wouldn’t have the impression you do if it weren’t for talentless hacks that genuinely record garbage and hit #1.

Generally I dislike anything electronic. I can think of only a handful of songs I like that are electronic. So rap and EDM kind of suffer as a result, and my music tastes are frowned upon by my peers. But hey, I guess it takes all kinds to make a world!

I feel quite similarly, however, I do like Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest (the song) and was considering looking into the rest of The Fireman’s work.
Rap, well, doesn’t do anything for me.

I personaly think real instraments are not the end all be all.
Just cause someone is strumming a guitar doesn’t make a song great.

Totally agree! For me, there’s good electronic music as well as bad sounding acoustic music. Surely, electronic music is probably only at the beginning nowadays but if the quality of electronic sounds and instruments increases, it could be an exciting addition to music with real instruments.
Personally, I also don’t see the difference when The Beatles put vocals through a Leslie Speaker or a band nowadays electronically distorts vocals to create a special effect. If you listen to Kid A by Radiohead, for example, the electronic sounds create a gloomy and very intense atmosphere I doubt they could have entirely achieved with real instruments.
But it would be indeed sad if electronic sounds would completely replace real instruments – diversity is such a wonderful thing!

NeckoNot once does the diversity seem forced -- the genius of the record is how the vaudevillian "When I'm 64" seems like a logical extension of "Within You Without You" and how it provides a gateway to the chiming guitars of "Lovely Rita. - Stephen T. Erlewine on Sgt Pepper's

I think rap is a very interesting genre that I am trying to get into more.
I dislike this ‘if it doesn’t contain instruments it’s not music’ attitude. What I look for in music is two things: artists who can do something original and artists who can make music that sounds good to my ears. I don’t listen to music purely for complexity or for what instruments it contains (aside from guitar music because I’m a guitar player).
Some people think that using samples to make music isn’t creative but I think it’s one of the most creative ways. To find a completely unrelated snippet of music and use it to great effect in a new and different context is genius in my opinion. It’s not just rap artists who do it.
I’ve listened to and enjoyed music by Tupac, Biggie, Eminem and Kendick Lamar but I’ve not dug deeper into the genre like I have with classic rock and classical music.

Like I said, there are exceptions but the majority of rappers use samples and drum machines. Even the rappers that do use real instruments often use drum machines, whether it be for some or all of the drum parts, even Channel Orange uses some drum programming.

Don’t feel left out, I hate rap and EDM myself and I bet there are many others on this forum that would agree with us.

They aren’t, it’s just that I don’t think you have musical talent if you’re using samples and drum machines in place of real instruments and that you can’t sing if you need to use autotune.

There are many piss poor songs that I think suck that have a guitar part in them, I could name 10 right off my back:
1. California Girls (Katy Perry, 2010, Pop)
2. Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) (Green Day, 1997, Pop Punk)
3. Don’t Stop Beleivin’ (Journey, 1981, Classic Rock)
4. Before I Forget (Slipknot, 2004, Heavy Metal)
5. Cake By The Ocean (DNCE, 2015, Pop)
6. All About That Bass (Meghan Trainor, 2014, Pop)
7. Tonight’s The Night (Gonna Be Alright) (Rod Stewart, 1976, Pop Rock)
8. You’re My Best Friend (Queen, 1975, Glam Rock)
9. The Climb (Miley Cyrus, 2009, Pop)
10. Shake It Off (Taylor Swift, 2014, Pop)

Autotune is a tool, like how the Beatles would mess with their voices.

There’s a difference between messing around with your voices and using autotune in place of singing talent, The Beatles never used tools to accommodate for a lack of vocal talent, they sang fairly and when they did mess around with their voice, they’d either mess around with the speed of the tape or do stuff like lay down on the floor to record the vocals or record them through a Leslie speaker, John, Paul, and George all have great singing voices, they don’t need autotune like someone like Lil’ Wayne or T-Pain, I’d hate to hear The Beatles sounding like Stephen Hawking.

Agreed, no one will even come close to being as good as The Beatles, the only band that got close was Queen and even they aren’t as good.
Dunno about that. Being as good as the Beatles is easy. But being as popular is a harder feat to accomplish.
Besides, Queen sucks.

You may think that Queen sucks but I think they’re great, what other band can make such great songs as Tie Your Mother Down, Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, and We Are The Champions, can’t think of any. Also, unlike many bands, Queen’s sound was purely based around talent (at least until the 80’s), Freddie Mercury is the best rock singer of all time, even better than The Beatles in my opinion, Brian May is an excellent guitarist who showed us what the instrument can do if it’s put in the right hands, John Deacon and Roger Taylor are nothing special but they’re there and it’s all good. In my opinion, Queen are The Beatles of the 1970’s.
