From these Velvet Underground’s Candy Says. I believe these lyrics are about transgender dysphoria, which makes them even more beautiful:

[Verse 1]
Candy says
I’ve come to hate my body
And all that it requires in this world

Candy says
I’d like to know completely
What others so discreetly talk about

[Chorus]
I’m going to watch the blue birds fly
Over my shoulder
I’m going to watch them pass me by
Maybe when I’m older
What do you think I’d see
If I could walk away from me

[Verse 2]
Candy says
I hate the quiet places
That cause the smallest taste of what will be
Candy says
I hate the big decisions
That cause endless revisions in my mind

[Chorus]
I’m going to watch the blue birds fly
Over my shoulder
I’m going to watch them pass me by
Maybe when I’m older
What do you think I’d see
If I could walk away from me

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

ahdn_paul_06 I wouldn’t say that they were ‘about’ gender dysphoria but I can definitely see how they could be applied to that experience.

The ‘Candy’ in this song was Candy Darling, an Andy Warhol actress who also appears in Lou’s hit Walk On The Wild Side (“Candy came out from the island//In the backroom she was everybody’s Darling” being a pun on her name). She was an early transgender icon, and Lou wrote the song from her perspective. Lou also dedicated his 1976 album Coney Island Baby to a transgender woman named Rachel who he was dating at the time.

Haha, I’ve loved that song for 32 years and didn’t learn who/what it was about until reading a Lou bio last month.

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

I love how Lou Reed’s lyrics are like kinda short movies. Another example and a favourite of mine:

I know, it’s so interesting! I found out about it when I read Uptight: The Velvet Underground story and my heart melted. Lou & The Velvets were ahead of their time in so many ways.

The Gift is a very underrated VU song indeed. The story is so tongue in cheek and the ending made my jaw drop with how matter-of-fact it was.

This Nick Lowe song seems appropriate today…

As I walk through
This wicked world
Searchin’ for light in the darkness of insanity
I ask myself
Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?

And each time I feel like this inside
There’s one thing I wanna know:
What’s so funny ’bout peace love and understanding? Ohhhh
What’s so funny ’bout peace love and understanding?

And as I walked on
Through troubled times
My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes
So where are the strong
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony

‘Cause each time I feel it slippin’ away, just makes me wanna cry
What’s so funny ’bout peace love and understanding? Ohhhh
What’s so funny ’bout peace love and understanding?

So where are the strong?
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony

‘Cause each time I feel it slippin’ away, just makes me wanna cry
What’s so funny ’bout peace love and understanding? Ohhhh
What’s so funny ’bout peace love and understanding? Ohhhh
What’s so funny about peace, love and understanding

From Sleater-Kinney’s Modern Girl. Very simple but powerful.

My baby loves me, I’m so happy
Happy makes me a modern girl
Took my money and bought a TV
TV brings me closer to the world

My baby loves me, I’m so hungry
Hunger makes me a modern girl
Took my money and bought a donut
The hole’s the size of this entire world

My baby loves me, I’m so angry
Anger makes me a modern girl
Took my money, I couldn’t buy nothin’
I’m sick of this brave new world

My whole life
Is like a picture of a sunny day
My whole life
Is like a picture of a sunny day

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

From Life On Mars?

It’s on America’s tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
‘Cause Lennon’s on sale again
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns

I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them
But they were only satellites
It’s wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish, I wish, I wish you’d care

From Björk’s Hyper-Ballad

We live on a mountain
Right at the top
There’s a beautiful view
From the top of the mountain
Every morning I walk towards the edge
And throw little things off
Like: car-parts, bottles and cutlery
Or whatever I find lying around

It’s become a habit
A way
To start the day

I go through all this
Before you wake up
So I can feel happier
To be safe up here with you

I go through all this
Before you wake up
So I can feel happier
To be safe up here with you

It’s early morning
No-one is awake
I’m back at my cliff
Still throwing things off
I listen to the sounds they make
On their way down
I follow with my eyes ’til they crash
I imagine what my body would sound like
Slamming against those rocks

And when it lands
Will my eyes
Be closed or open?

Uh, yeah
Uh
Good mornin’ ladies and gentlemen (“What hotel number is she in?”)
Boys and motherfuckin’ girls (“319, 319” “Cool”)
This is your captain with no name speakin’
And I’m here to rock your world
With a tale that will soon be classic
About a woman you already know
No prostitute she, but the mayor of your brain
Pussy Control (Are you ready?)
Pussy Control, oh
Pussy Control, oh
From My favorite Prince song P. Control
