Hey @Linde – I’m cheering for Netherlands now that we are out:
1) I think they deserve to win one after losing 3 finals in years gone by
2) They have our new manager

The anger from U.S. fans after they failed to put Portugal away was hilarious. I’m sorry, but 5 years ago they could have cared less. Now they do? I mean, I wish the U.S. team luck, but they’re not beating Germany. It’s not happening, Germany’s just too good, and while they won’t cop to it, I think it angers the German team that their old captain (and one of Germany’s greatest players) is coaching the U.S. team. I’m calling it a 3-1 win for the Germans, but the U.S. still advances to the knockout round because it’s gonna take some doing for either Ghana or Portugal to edge the U.S. out.

Yeah. I’m obviously rooting for the United States but I know very well that Germany may more likely win. They’re much stronger on the attack. Anyways, best of luck!

Luis Suárez ban has just been announced. 9 international games, banned from all World Cup venues, 100,000 Swiss francs fine (about £65,000), and a four month ban from all football related activity – which means he’s out for Liverpool until sometime October (seems lucky that they didn’t say he was banned for the first four months of whatever league he is playing in).

Good riddance. I don’t think anyone will miss him.

Uuugh. Now that Germany scored I need the United States to nab one in to tie the game. But they are not strong with the ball. But I think that Germany scored a good goal. The goalie blocked the first one, and they nabbed it in on the second! Brilliant!

Well, it may be by goal difference, but the US go through to the next round!

The US scored 4 and conceded 4, which gives them a goal difference of 0.
Portugal scored 4 and conceded 7, which gives them a goal difference of -3.
Both scored 4 points in the group, the US go through on goal difference.

Congrats to the US Team for making it out of Group play. No matter what happens next, it’s nice to at least make it too the next round for a change.
I don’t get into soccer much, but enjoyed playing it in my younger days and get excited about the WC every 4 years just like the Olympics. After the WC tournament is over, I don’t care about watching any soccer games at all. From what I understand, many Americans feel the same. I think soccer’s popularity over here is on the rise, but that tends to happen every four years. If Team USA were stronger year over year, that could change. I just don’t know how strong they can get though, until our best athletes start playing the sport. Over here baseball, American football, basketball and hockey players get paid insane amounts of money. Those sports attract the “best of the best” because of that, which means soccer has little chance.

I hate penalities. I also hate that the same teams seem to win them all the time and often play to get them in the last 30 or so.
Go Colombia – though I have a sad feeling that Brazil will continue to play crap and win the thing anyway.

Everyone has to overcome the might of Greece. Can they better their Euro 2004 win where they beat the home nation, Portugal, in the final – and bored the pants off every non-Greek spectator in the process.
