I think that people tend to make too much out of it (not responding to anyone in this thread, to be clear).
A couple years ago, Nine Inch Nails was eligible for induction. Because of the rabid fanbase, NIN was far and away taking the lead in the online voting. NIN didn’t get inducted. Ninnies, of course, took it personally and threw a s**t fit. They kept whining because Green Day got in and not what they liked.
It’s supposed to be fun, not something meant to be taken seriously as grim death.

I don’t know. I know they were nominated a couple times. I kind of don’t think so.

No, they aren’t yet, they were nominated this year but didn’t make it if I understood it correctly and I completely agree, they would’ve deserved it.
Others: Joy Division, Tina Turner, Nick Drake
I wonder when Radiohead will be inducted as they’ll be eligible from next year on.
Not once does the diversity seem forced -- the genius of the record is how the vaudevillian "When I'm 64" seems like a logical extension of "Within You Without You" and how it provides a gateway to the chiming guitars of "Lovely Rita. - Stephen T. Erlewine on Sgt Pepper's

I’m going to be a bit controversial here and say Ringo.
“What the feck you on about?” I hear you cry, “He’s already in the Hall of Fame!”
No, he’s not. John, Paul and George are; Ringo isn’t.
To enter the Hall of Fame, a list is drawn up by a committee of between 9 and 12 artists; that list is then sent out to 600 “rock experts” who vote on it.
That is the process by which John, Paul and George were elected to the Hall of Fame. Ringo was given honorary membership without going through that process.
After much badgering by Paul, Ringo was given the Award for Musical Excellence, selected by committee; replacing the Sidemen award, it “honors those musicians, producers and others who have spent their careers out of the spotlight working with major artists on various parts of their recording and live careers.”
I argued it was an insult at the time, and still think the same. Ringo should be put on the ballot and, at least, given the chance to join the voted on Performers section, which is the section being discussed here.
I, for one, think that if he were put on the ballot, he would secure his place among the Performers; which is where he belongs as one of the most important and influential drummers of all time, and as someone who still attracts interest and an audience.

I feel that Radiohead would have reservations even if they were selected. I don’t think they have much of a fondness for the ‘rock establishment’.
Joy Division would be cool, unfortunately I don’t think Nick Drake would get selected. He’s still quite a cult artist.
Looking at the list of inductees, I think the following should be included:
Blue Oyster Cult, Jethro Tull, Smashing Pumpkins, Talking Heads…
"And life flows on within you and without you" - George Harrison

That’s true, the other day I read an interview with Jonny Greenwood I think it was and he told the interviewer he would rather sit at home in front of the fire or play a gig than to go to a possible induction because as Brits they couldn’t understand something as American as that. Well, I think that says everything about their attitude towards the Hall of Fame.

Talking Heads is a good selection – I would’ve assumed they were in already. BOC – I love em to pieces but dunno how “important” or influential they were…at least compared to metal counterparts Black Sabbath (who definitely deserved their induction, and I say this despite personally preferring the Cult).
I suspect Radiohead will make it someday…they’ve possibly been the most “prestigious” rock(?) band of the last coupla decades. If that means anything.
Tull or the Punkins…I don’t think they really have much of a chance.

Saying that though, looking over the list i’d say there are already quite a few questionable inductees. Green Day and Cheap Trick are just two examples…
I’d say Talking Heads, Jethro Tull & Smashing Pumpkins are more influencial then both of them personally.

The Smiths, but I also hope they aren’t, because they are typically very anti music establishment and share my dislike of the hall of fame.
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Lotta Smiths fans here! Maybe they will be inducted, then they can just turn it down…
Green Day pisses me off because there are 316 similar pop-punk bands who came before ’em but didn’t have 1% of their sales despite being way more original!
Tina Turner not in?! Weird
GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

Record sales does play a huge part in making it the hall of fame but I think Green Day deserves to be there. I would say that maybe they have been inducted earlier then expected.
I don’t think Deep Purple are in there so I would say them and the Monkees who have been ignored many times because they aren’t considered a real band but I still think they deserve a place.
And in the end the lunch you take is equal to the lunch you bake.

There’s at least one (former?) HOF induction committee dude who flat out refuses to consider the Monkees. I’d be happy to see them make it! Deep Purple too, altho again Sabbath deserve that metal slot more. I think.
I do think that record sales play a part! The Eagles are possibly the world’s most mediocre band (and possibly also the worst) yet they’ve sold a half billion units so obviously they’re in the hall!
(I don’t really dislike Green Day, I respect their work ethic and songwriting talent. But they were such immature dicks in a Rolling Stone profile back in ’94 or so…and so I have the right to complain about them being chosen before Husker Du or The Buzzcocks, since those earlier guys kinda helped invent the Green Day sound, I suspect.)

I think it was Jann Wenner who has refused to let The Monkees in because they weren’t a real band at first but there’s a lot of manufactured artist in the hall so I don’t see why The Monkees are such a big deal but you never know they might get in one day.
I’m not a big fan of The Eagles either but they are kind of the ultimate American rock band who have also sold a lot of records so it is no surprise that they are in the hall of fame.
I feel like Deep Purple should be in the hall for Smoke on the Water alone because everyone learns that song on the guitar and plus Deep Purple helped create Heavy Metal along with Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.
Green Day were pretty obnoxious in the early days so I could imagine them saying something that would have pissed some people off but they seem to have grown up a bit and take aim at world leaders these days. I think they deserve a spot for Dookie and American Idiot alone.

Another one which has occurred to me: Wings! If Eric Clapton can be in there three times (as a member of The Yardbirds, as a member of Cream and as a solo artist), then why can’t Paul!? Unless they included Wings already under Paul’s solo induction…

Wow, Bob Moog isn’t in as a builder?! That’s negligent.
Frankly I don’t think Wings were good enough for the hall! Yardbirds and Cream were hugely influential and had many important band members pass through.
xxpost yeah, Wenner is probably the one,..I was thinking Dave Marsh at first, but now I think it was Kiss he was opposed to. Which I kinda agree with.
