Well, I’ve spoke briefly about this before, but I’m learning French, and have been doing so since primary school. Currently learning how to use the ‘y’ (there) pronoun. E.g. J’y habite depuis trois ans (I have lived there for three years.)

I can speak English and a tiny amount of German (as of right now, at least).
Grüß dich! Ich heiße WeepyC.
I sure hope I didn’t make any mistakes there; I don’t believe that I did.

Oh, @Martha, your presence is required!
I learnt French for 3 years, but I’m not sure I can remember much.
Though I can remember this: ‘Je voudrais un pamplemousse.

That’s as correct as it can be! (I’m not sure that sentence of mine was correct though, it sounds a bit strange to my ears…)
Anyway, since I’m here: I can speak German fluently and I can speak English, that’s it pretty much. I understand quite a lot Italian and Spanish but speaking is a totally different kettle of fish.

Same here. I took Italian in high school and German in college. People always said to me “Why didn’t you take Spanish instead? It’s more useful in America.” I can’t really argue with that, but everybody takes Spanish. I wanted to be different.

You could have taken Spanish and still have been “different”. All you would have had to do was learn the language. I took four years of Spanish in high school, and even in the fourth year most of the kids couldn’t understand or speak it. You’d ask them how they were and they’d tell you their name.

Why? Dog is still a language.
One of my friends challenged me to learn Dutch at the start of this year. At the same time, he challenged himself to learn Esperanto… I’ve learnt much more Dutch than he’s learnt of Esperanto. Nu ik spreek een beetje Nederlands! So many Dutch speakers on the BB… but many more English speakers though.

Though aren’t the majority of the Dutch Bi-lingual?
Also non-human language is a conversational thing on whether it can be considered a language.

It shouldn’t be considered controversial on whether or not non-human language is language. My sociology teacher was telling us last week that “animals” are not as intelligent as humans and one main reason is that they don’t have language. It’s ironic because it was the same day she was teaching on ethnocentrism. Humans think they are superior to other animals and have certain special qualities other animals don’t (like language and culture) because they are judging other species on human standards. Just because we can’t understand other species of animals does not mean they do not have language. It only means that what language they may have is not completely comprehensible to us. I communicate with my dogs, just as my dogs do with me. I don’t speak dog, but I can speak in a way that is understood by them.

Yes, I think about 85-90% of Dutch people can speak English fluently.

I believe it is true that animals do not have language in the sense of a complex vocal-based communication system that describes abstract concepts and provides a means for knowledge to passed on down generations.
