Yeah, we take French (or Anglais) classes from about age 8 through 14, but they're optional after that, and they only cover the very basics. And I hated it and only learned the bare minimum, and then abandoned it forever (and immediately forgot a lot of what I learned!) Nobody's fault but my own, I know…Actually, I've considered learning to read & write it better, so I could communicate with a keyboard, or paper & pencil if necessary. But for now I'm content to let the French speak English, that way they can feel superior. Everybody wins!
I know this post is breaking my self imposed “no responding to a post from 9 or more months earlier” rule, but Von, be very glad you live near Toronto and not in, say, the outskirts of Montreal. Because that would amount to treason. In terms of the actual question, I'm a native English speaker who can (and has been forced to a couple of times in the last couple of months) hold a conversation in French.

I almost wish learning a language was compulsory in schools in England, because I really regret not getting a French GCSE. It helps so much with university applications, and I do really like the French language. I was looking to get lessons at home recently but they cost so much, so I guess I'm staying monolingual.
I think it's great you're going through a phase,
and I'm awfully glad it'll all be over in a couple

You guys speak Mandarin? That’s so cool. But… I still suck at it.
*9* second in a row!
Yeah, I'm not that fluent either. I rarely read Chinese (or write), and my parents are speaking more and more English at home, so yeah.
Your native language is Chinese, too??? Cool! I don't know any other Asians that are Beatle fans. They're so little known over there, at least from what my grandparents told me.

My mum can't speak Mandarin that well, either. So, I guess I'm better at English.
Yeah! I do know another girl from my school who is a Beatle's fan. Other than that… not so much. But people here at least know and like the Beatles just a little. And yay, another Asian fan

English is my native tongue but I can speak a bit of Germana nd french–read in both those languages quite well, very rusty with speaking and writing. Currently I'm studying Scottish Gaelic and am near-fluent in that.
I love languages but I rarely get opportunity to use the ones I know in speaking, since anyone who comes to the US tries to speak English, so it's hard to keep them up.
I'm not a girl who misses much.

English (my native language :P) and Spanish, I spoke fluently when I was little because my nannie was from Mexico. But after she died (God rest her soul), I gradually began to forget. But I have been taking Spanish classes and I’m starting to re-learn.
Good Dog Nigel. Arf, Arf, he goes, a merry sight. Our little hairy friend. Arf, Arf, upon the lampost bright, arfing around the bend. Nice dog! Goo boy, waggie tail and beg. Clever Nigel, jump for joy

Finnish and English. And I'm supposed to be able to speak Swedish, but it's just pathetic. Förlåt att jag är så dålig. I've also studied some Spanish, Latin and Japanese but I can hardly construct any sentences in them let alone speak fluentlyWish I was naturally bilingual like you are, jagger( well, almost)

I can speak English and thats it. In school we were forced to do French, you didnt get the option, but i didnt make the effort and got a 6, that means you turned up for the exam but failed completely and got the lowest mark possible. The teachers were so arrogant.
