Absolutely mind-blowing, seeing actual filmed footage of Mingus and Dolphy and those other legends…and just a few months before Dolphy’s tragic and senseless early death. 🙁 And I don’t even mind if the colour photography is really colorized b&w!
Thanks, Shamrock

Nice to be back in my own apartment, with my Bluetooth speaker to amplify the phone’s audio, so I can properly hear the comforting sounds of “Smokey’s Soul Town” channel on satellite radio, to which I’ve been devoting most of my passive listening in the last few months. And so I can get back into my habit of posting here whenever a Beatles cover is played – including this one which regularly tops those “Best Beatles cover?” questionnaires

On a lark, I searched for Smokey’s Soul Town on YT and found a channel with over 140 songs — so far, pleasant stuff.

Gave a quick look to that playlist, and yeah, many of the selections there are ones that are in regular rotation on the Sirius channel, but it also has a few artists (Whitney Houston, Debarge, George Michael) from a chronologically later time than has ever showed up on ‘SST’, which playlist seems confined to the very late ’50s through the very early 80s, with a huge bulk of that coming from the mid-60s thru mid-70s – which many would argue was the peak era for the genre…
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Released on this day in 2018, I fondly remember listening to it a fair bit when it came out but hadn’t given it a spin in a while, so it’s been a pleasant trip down memory lane to a happier time…

Bobbie Gentry – Ode to Billie Joe
I saw a post online about the best “storytelling” songs, and there were lots of mentions of this. Not a single wasted lyric, it’s so simple but so haunting.
