Released on this day in 1971:

David Bowie – Hunky Dory

That’s a most excellent list @Magill. I may be biased since the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Queen are all among my favorite bands. ahdn_john_08_gif

Tom Waits – Closing Time

Fantastic debut by one of modern music’s most idiosyncratic performers. I think I’d like to make music like Tom Waits if I ever did it full time.

This evenings listening: a bunch of Girlschool on shuffle; selected tracks by Mountain; Poison’s “Look What the Cat Dragged In”

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Continuing my complete Fall obsession. Their enormous discography (37 studio albums by my count, plus 22 live albums, 24 Peel sessions, and countless EPs and singles) is becoming somewhat less daunting now I’ve heard a good chunk of the 80s stuff and am making inroads on the 90s, 00s, and 10s.

Some of the tracks I’ve come to like best include the jangly, dreamy ‘Disney’s Dream Debased’, the harrowing industrial stomping of ‘Blindness’, the oddly upbeat melody and psychedelic production of ‘Paintwork’.. Their body of work has so many hidden gems it feels like it’ll take years to hear them all. The song I’m completely focused on right now, though, is the stunning ‘Edinburgh Man’, their very own ‘Waterloo Sunset’, except with a distinctly M.E.S. twinge.

@QuarryMan – I should really do a deeper dive on The Fall, I love what I’ve heard and there’s no shortage of stuff of theirs to hear

they seem like a gift that just keeps on giving

one album of theirs I don’t see mentioned much that I’m pretty fond of is Dragnet

For me, aside from the towering achievement that is Hex Enduction Hour, their initial period from forming to around ’82 isn’t all that interesting compared with the later stuff but I’ll definitely give Dragnet another go, the cover is really neat after all. Their entire discography seems to be full of hidden gems, though. When I first tried listening to them, Live at the Witch Trials just bewildered me, and then on my second attempt, none of their most popular songs on Spotify (‘Hit the North’, ‘Totally Wired’, ‘Victoria’) did much for me at all, bar ‘Bill is Dead’, which has since become one of my favourite songs ever. As for my top Fall albums that I’ve heard so far, I think Hex Enduction Hour, Extricate, Country on the Click and Fall Heads Roll would be up there.

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Hex and This Nation’s Saving Grace are my two favourites of theirs

they’re definitely an acquired taste, but I’m a fan (I tend to be a fan of acquired tastes)

I like a hefty portion of those early fall albums from Witch Trials through this nation, very unique and I especially appreciated ed that double drum sound they had for a bit…but Mark E.’s lyrical subject matter is too esoteric for me to follow, usually.

Now playing Run-DMC

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

I don’t even try and follow what he’s saying, hahaha

I think of his vocals as being just another instrument

Mark can write some really great lyrics when he wants to, to be fair, but also his kind of mad semi-ad libbing is also wonderful, like on ‘The Classical’.
