I’m listening to one of the absolutely, fabsolutely most FABULOUS debut singles of all-time! (swell video too, created two eventful years later)
Heh I just finished watching The Runaways yesterday– I got super excited at the end when they showed Joan looking cool and being successful with her new solo career. They didn’t play “Bad Reputation” though during those sequences at the end, but instead played bits of “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll ” and I think “Crimson and Clover” (which is literally one of my favorite songs– its a cover that, in my opinion, exceeds the original song significantly. “ILRNR” is also a terrific fecking cover, as well.).
I absolutely love Joan Jett in general tho — one the best feminist icons there is in Rock ‘N’ Roll , and a prominent dykon.

I’m quite the fan of JJ and nowhere near the debut single, VB.
Featured on her 1980 self-titled debut album (later rereleased as Bad Reputation in 1981) but the first single off the album was 1979’s You Don’t Own Me as a double a-side with the first version of I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll , followed by 2 singles – Make Believe and You Don’t Know What You’ve Got – in 1980, with Jezebel and Bad Reputation coming as their fourth single, another double a-side, in 1981.

Grateful Dead – Not Fade Away–Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad (4-5-71) NY
That’s a great cover I wasn’t aware of! One of my favourite Buddy Holly songs.
Also I noticed some time ago that these three songs (one of them Not Fade Away) are some of my all-time favourites and they all have similar riffs. Definitely an early rock standard. My favourite one though is definitely the Dick Dale one

Nice choices up there. “Not Fade Away” is a great song, one of their best even. I personally prefer “That’ll be the day”, but this song’s pretty close in comparison.
I decided it’d be Ellington week for myself, so I started out with this album:
Highlights for myself include: “Clarinet Lament”, “Trumpet in Spades”, “Mood Indigo” and “Crescendo in Blue”. Definitely recommend it.

You’re right Jules, I never noticed that. That music really takes be back to a time I wasn’t even allowed to listen to music (still found a way though).
Ok, I am going on a full Beatle binge through the holiday. I have lots of good stuff I have and haven’t listened to. I’m starting with some live tracks. This is HELP! from a UK television appearance on 1/8/65. A couple of observations, while originally watching the Beatles perform in the 1960s I realize that John was my primary focus. I watch clips now and I’m amazed/amused at the others movement and style, as if I’m seeing it for the first time. Also, in my mind this clip represents the main stage plotting the Beatles used (Paul and George on the left sharing a mic, Ringo back-center and John a bit forward on the right). I’m always a bit surprised when I see them in a different plot, such as for the first song on the Ed Sullivan Show:

^^^Everytime I watch a live performance, it feels like I’m seeing them for the first time all over again. I love watching them perform– it’s quite a treasure to see the Beatle magic work live, even if just through youtube clips and documentaries *sigh*
my sweet lord, I really am fecking head-over-heels in love with them–

Heathen is such a good album oh my starmen and lady stardust garters
I didn’t get to do as much Bowie bingeing as I intended, I was busy listening to Tudor era court music, Erik Satie, and nocturnes by Chopin for our evening family drawing session how dreadful, amirite?

Great stuff Vonbon, thanks!
Curiously enough, the Dick Dale track I posted isn’t included in the mentions.
EDIT: oh wait, there is a Dick Dale track listed as “Tribal Thunder”, which I’m listening to right now and it seems to be the same track as Surfing Drums but re-done with another title.

Comparing this version of “Nowadays” to the movie version before I go off to sleep– I freaking love this song in general though, the perfect ending to a terrific musical.
After reflecting and comparing, my one gripe with the movie version compared to the 1997 Broadway Cast version is that I wish they made one extended duet with Roxie and Velma instead of only giving them like a minute of the song before going into “Hot Honey Rag”
And I also do really like the Original Cast version with Gwen Verdon as Roxie and Chita Rivera as Velma (though Chita isn’t really my favorite Velma, by far– she was the original, but her version was a bit…..cheesy and not quite so dark and sexy as Bebe Neuwirth’s and Catherine Zeta-Jones’ Velmas, who I believe both captured and executed the true character of Velma Kelly extremely well, developed her further. Also not a huge fan of Chita’s singing style in her Chicago numbers either– besides “Nowadays”, of course)
