Dive into Duke Ellington for the real gold. Maybe start with his Newport ’56 show, Jeep’s Blues is a highlight. The more I get into jazz the more the Duke is far and away my favorite. I’m also a big clarinet guy, I like my Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. Charlie Christian played guitar with Benny Goodman one of the greatest ever.

Just giving a first listen to Max Roach’s It’s Time and I’m pretty gobsmacked with how good it is. Orchestral sounding choirs, tenor saxophone soloing and of course some of the best damn drum playing you’ll ever heard. I’m also extremely frustrated that his Freedom Now suite isn’t on Spotify. Grrrr.
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

I’d join you but I’m getting my Fistful of Mercy fix, so maybe after this.

Hey @QuarryMan , @Jules you guys might find these live duets for alto sax and piano enjoyable…
I really appreciate the gesture but I’m afraid to say the more random jazz gets, the less I like it. My review of Ascension should’ve given that impression. I listened to it and I didn’t understand anything, free jazz is a musical language I still don’t quite grasp yet. And I honestly don’t even find it interesting anymore, it sounds all the same in
And later I was thinking of continuing with Coltrane: either Coltrane (1962), Ballads (1963) or Live at Birdland (1964).
@QuarryMan I’m reporting to inform I’m in the middle of my Coltrane rediscovery I saw the documentary Chasing Trane which made it easier for me to understand him as a person given it is the medium I’m more familiarized with, films. It was excellent, I highly recommend it, it really helped me get to know him as a person way more. He was such a kind man, I never knew that, I always assumed he was grumpy because on his covers he hardly smiled. Now I don’t have this feeling he’s looking down on me anymore, because he seemed so vulnerable and humble on the doc. First off I loved the hell out of Africa/Brass, that record is very special, why did nobody recommended it to me?, the closest thing to Olé Coltrane I’ve found. I like how in the title track of both albums he slowly moves into this foreign aesthetic and really spaces out his solos. This slow-burning way of intensity is what really grabs me. In these two records his compositions remind me of Mingus more than anything and I love his music so it is a huge compliment coming from me. Definitely my kind of thing. I guess I’m a 1961 Coltrane kinda guy. My opinions haven’t changed much regarding the rest of his albums of which I revisited only Giant Steps and A Love Supreme. I still don’t care for that last record. I’ll have to give that one a little more time. And I’m honestly afraid to listen to anything after 1964 because I have this sneaking suspicion it is also free jazz..
And also this “Bags & Trane” record from 1961 seems interesting, which is a collaboration with a vibraphone player that nobody gave two sh*ts about until Fantano recommended it and it suddenly started getting attention on RYM lol I guess I’ll check it out too.
[/spoiler]
Haha I recommended “Africa/Brass” to you on March 30! Glad you like it, it’s an unusual project for Coltrane…”Olé” is a good companion piece; Trane was indeed in kind of a world-music phase in 1961. (Also recorded several takes of “India” that year, some with guest tambura and oud backing, during the Village Vanguard residence.)
You’re right about 1965 being the year that he went completely “free” in his playing, and Elvin Jones’ muscular time-signatures were similarly abandoned for Rashied Ali’s arrhythmic approach, so most of that would not be your thing…but maybe give a listen to “Expression”, his final recording (and first posthumous release). It’s not at all just high-energy screaming; there’s a kind of alert calm beauty; possibly the man knew he was dying, but that’s unclear.
And I wouldn’t say “nobody” gave a s**t about Milt “Bags” Jackson – he was the vibist for the Modern Jazz Quartet, and they were well-regarded enough for Apple Records to sign them in 1968! Here they are jamming with a popular rock n roller…
Anyways, just adding my thoughts as always. (Yours are appreciated.) Carry on with the Clash and Ellington!
(I still need to see Chasing Trane too…)

bird>trane and it’s not particularly close in my opinion. Coltrane is cool and all, but Charlie Parker is the king of bop. Arguably the greatest genius in musical history, probably the greatest innovator since Bach, literally inventing new forms of music theory off the top. An absolute machine. Although my personal favorite Sax player is Johnny Hodges, who played with the Duke for decades.

I sing their praises to the skies whenever I can, they’re three sisters who are literally my age and a little younger but more accomplished musicians than I will ever be and I’m so impressed I love them even though they hurt my ego.

Forgot to answer to this. I didn’t mean Milton wasn’t well-known, I meant the record. If he wasn’t well-known I don’t think he would’ve reached a point were he was working with John Coltrane.

If you want to hear zoomer rock, @lovelyritametermaid , look no further than Black Midi. Not only are they *the* most zoomer thing in existence (their entire career comes across like one big sh*tpost, and plus none of them look a day over 18), they’re also probably the future of rock music.
After hearing about Florian’s death I listened to Kraftwerk until 3am, but now I’m up, feeling slightly better and listening to Yeezus.

Harsh rating for Ye there! I think my ranking would be –
11. Jesus Is King (4/10) – Unfinished and unfocused. A waste of time, especially considering how good it could’ve been.
10. Watch The Throne (6/10) – A rather boring collaboration with a couple of highlights, particularly ‘No Church In The Wild’.
9. Graduation (6/10) – I feel like this one failed at what MBDTF succeeded at three years later. ‘Flashing Lights’ is amazing, though.
8. Ye (6/10) – Some great songs there, particularly ‘Ghost Town’, but this felt unfinished and would’ve worked better as a longer, more fleshed out project.
7. The Life of Pablo (7/10) – The opposite of Ye, this one has many amazing songs but is ultimately disadvantaged by how sprawling and messy it is.
6. Late Registration (8/10) – Ornate, baroque-rap that builds on his established formula without losing the charm.
5. The College Dropout (8/10) – The perfect reminder of why people found Kanye so refreshing – he was witty and introspective in an era of dull bragging, and his skill as a producer was bursting through even then.
4. 808s and Heartbreak (8/10) – A record that only becomes more influential as time goes on. Also contains my favourite of his songs, ‘Street Lights’.
3. Yeezus (9/10) – Abrasive, aggressive hip hop that mixes its confrontational style with moments of beauty.
2. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (9/10) – I’ve never heard hip hop that comes close to being as ambitious, expansive and epic as this. Perhaps bloated at times but still truly amazing.
1. Kids See Ghosts (10/10) – This one always amazes me by how many different ideas it can fit in to such a short runtime, making it his most airtight and experimental album, as well as his most cathartic.
