Have you watched the Beastie Boys Story doc on Apple TV+? It’s well worth subscribing to it for a month just to watch it.
Yes actually! That is what prompted me to listen to it– I watched it with my step-dad the other night
Currently listening to:
Tug Of War — Paul McCartney (1982)

Sorry Scott,
Haha a friend mentioned that very album just a few nights ago on the phone; he doesn’t like them much either but makes an exception for “Not For You”. (I played it; ‘s’all right.)
I’m listening to Roxanne Shante’s “Bad Sister” album
“Thank you, thank you…It’s So Hard being the best! It’s So Hard being humble…did you get the money from the promoters?? Thank you!” gushes Lolita Shanté Gooden on “Live On Stage”, presumably accepting roses from the cheering crowd (sampled for a hook), and damn if she doesn’t earn the right to claim that title. The “unassuming owner of the most natural voice in rap” (Robert Christgau) has NO TIME for losers: bad lovers with bad breath (alongside inferior competition of either gender) get dissed, her attentive servant is dismissed, and one sad-sack cheating dude even gets the Lorena Bobbitt treatment. She and producer Marley Marl add a great deal of sound variety to the beats – spare “Funky Drummer” sample on the superb “Have A Nice Day”, rock guitar chords on “Let’s Rock Y’All, dub-levels of echo on the empowering “Independent Woman “, a quasi-psychedelic remix of “Go On Girl”. Shante’s wit and authority are a wonder, and that occasional little squeak in her 19-year old voice is endearing. Great album from hip-hop’s (first) golden age.

I’m a true ignoramus when it comes to Duke Ellington and his music, so I’m checking out a few of his suites. Currently on ‘The Single Petal of a Rose’ from The Queen’s Suite.

A “Psychedelic Pop” Playlist
It’s amazing how these steaming sites always try to sneak a Bowie song into their Sixties mix that no one has ever heard, not even in the sixties.
