Been listening to Gil! Scott! Heron! and Brian Jackson’s 1977 record ‘Bridges‘ whilst working on a chart of my favourite albums from every given year 1965-2014.

Screen-Shot-2020-04-24-at-20.46.10.pngImage Enlarger

Some years (’76, ’82, ’95, ’11) were an obvious sell, some (’67, ’71, ’91) were very tough decisions, and for some others (’72, ’82, every year from 2006-09) I was much more starved for choice. Seriously, why did the late 2000s suck so bad to the point where my favourite albums of ’08 and ’09 were both Phil Elverum albums that wouldn’t be in my top 5 in terms of his overall discography?

Cool to see Benji on your collage (from a great local bay area band). apple01 I might give this a try…

Benji was another obvious pick. I’ve never heard songwriting that hard-hitting and raw.

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Today I’ve run through Miles’ mid sixties discography, from ESP to Nefertiti, and now I’m checking out a couple of jazz albums I’ve stumbled across on RateYourMusic. Right now I’m about halfway through Horace Silver’s Song for My Father, which is an effervescent and joyous hard bop album. Next up is Gabor Szabo and Dreams, which is tagged on RYM as ‘gypsy jazz’, a term I’ve never heard before, so that should be interesting.

HELL F*CKING YEAH to Head Goddamn Hunters!

HELL YEAH to Amy Winehouse, that album is just incredibly underrated.

And HELL YEEEAAAHHH to GKMC

I’m curious about your 2015 pick, and I’m praying for it to be Kendrick as well. TPAB is one of my favourite albums.

@Jules here is my 2010s chart, 5 per year. I think for 2015 Carrie & Lowell just about beats out To Pimp A Butterfly (the latter is more significant culturally and such, but I have much more of a personal attachment to the former), and having recently got into it, Art Angels is a very close third. Honourable mention to Death Grips’ The Powers That B for that year, particularly Jenny Death

Still haven’t listened to Carrie & Nowell/Illinois. I’ll probably do in this next couple of weeks since it’s been sitting in my to-do list since the new Sufjan Stevens release dropped.

Surprised to see no Igor. Also shoutout to Channel Orange, Black Messiah, The Epic, Flower Boy, Blackstar, The Comet Is Coming and most of all, the Minecraft C418 Volume Alpha Soundtrack HELL YEAH to that. Have you ever altered yourself to that record? Jesus Christ…

Igor was on the 2019 list when I first made that chart, but I haven’t really listened to it much since it came out so I swapped it for Magdalene. I also meant to swap out The Suburbs or Cosmogramma from the 2010 list for Janelle Monaé’s Archandroid, a very underrated album. I’d definitely recommend both Sufjan records, as well as Age of Adz (in which he experiments with electronics to great effect) and his other Illinois styled baroque works, like Michigan

Also, what do you mean by ‘altered yourself’?

Yessssss ahdn_john_08_gif

Though Fistful of Mercy’s album would give it a run for its money in my book. ahdn_john_08_gif (Not that they’re comparable, one is a folky songwriter’s album and the other is a symphonic concept album.)

Also, what do you mean by ‘altered yourself’?

@lovelyritametermaid Hey on the topic of Tame Impala. I’ve heard a lot of people say he sounds like John Lennon . To me he doesn’t sound anything like John Lennon , he sounds uncannily like George Harrison actually. I can’t believe so many people are comparing his vocals to those of Lennon’s when he clearly resembles way more another Beatle that also was a heavy user of reverb as well. Literally any song on any Tame Impala album sounds like a modern version of a track that would feature on All Things Must Pass .

Not to make a compositional comparison. All Things Must Pass is one of my all-time favourite albums and Tame Impala’s discography is average at besta-hard-days-night-george-4

Hey! I think I actually know why people think he sounds like John? Apparently Kevin Parker’s bone structure in his nose is similar to John’s or something, which gives him signature nasally sound much akin to Lennon’s (Harrison also has a bit of a nasally whine to his singing, which maybe you think he sounds more like Harrison over Lennon). I forgot where I heard that from, actually…..I need to search for the source, but anyone correct me if I’m wrong mccartney-shrug_01_gif
