Just saw the Birth of the Cool documentary on Netflix early this morning, loved the hell out of it. So I decided it would be a special Miles day today.
I dived into his fusion period dozens of times, so I decided to make a morning out of going back and catching up with his cool era, that is not usually were I tend to go. This four records specifically, given they are pretty much a saga (even though I was familiarized with some of them, I never noticed they were connected before).
Cookin’, Relaxin’, Workin’ & Steamin’
Non of them particularly stand out, but as a quartet, this set of albums is a stunning appreciation of patience and texture. Even though they were released in between 1957 and 1961 (which means before and after Kind of Blue), all four were recorded between May and October of 1956 in the same sessions, just to settle a contract with the label Prestige and it shows. These records sound pre-Kind of Blue and it is beautiful to see that early blooming. This is basically Miles throwing loads of precious jazz music out the window just to get it over with and it still sounds amazing and the consistency throughout this four records is as strong as iron. Wikipedia even states that Cookin’ was recorded in a single session on October 26th. Wild.
Even the cover arts are interesting. They all have a particular predominant color (white – yellow – blue – orange), different fonts and positioning of the letters, two of them illustrations, two of them photographs, wildly different art styles, but paradoxically, they all sound exactly the same. I’m amazed by this collection of albums, they are pure gold. They might as well be considered one single 2 and a half hour record. Wonderful music to start the day off if you’re feeling sexy. I’ve just finished the last one and I’m planning to put ’em on shuffle while I work for the rest of the day.
This week maybe I’ll finally revisit Coltrane (that I’ve been postponing for a couple of days now). We’ll see then if it sticks

@Jules If you’re looking to get into Coltrane, I’d definitely recommend “Ole Coltrane” and “Coltrane Plays the Blues”, which both I find heavily overlooked, despite it being (in my opinion) some of his best. In fact, I’d consider the former to be one of my favorite jazz albums. Just a couple of cents from myself.

cookin workin relaxin and steamin were all recorded over the span of two sessions. the lineup of Philly Joe Jones on drums Paul Chambers on Bass, Red Garland on piano, Coltrane on sax and of course Miles on trumpet is legendary.
Relaxin is probably my favorite as i’ve studied and played If I Were A Bell Oleo and It Could Happen to you in school.

Side note: I’m really liking “Point of View/Where to Spend my Dollar?”. Any other Canadian albums I should look out for?
Well, there’s Joni and Neil and Leonard Cohen, of course. The most-loved Canadian rock band of the last 30 years was probably the Tragically Hip, whose final concert was televised live cross-country a few years back; singer Gordon Downey succumbed to a brain tumour shortly after.

Is there any other song that can lodge itself so firmly in your head with just two syllables? All you have to hear is ‘zombeh’ and you won’t get it out your brain for at least a day.
@Jules neat idea to listen to all those albums in one go, I’ll have to try that one soon. I’m trying to think of good points that might get you into Trane. Yesterday I listened to Blue Train and ‘I’m Old Fashioned’ in particular stuck out to me as always, so maybe that album is a good one to give a try to.
I’ve been listening to 80s and 90s hip-hop all day (2pac, Nas, Notorious B.I.G., Public Enemy, N.W.A. and OutKast), but now I’m working on my essay to Nina Simone’s I Put A Spell On You.

I don’t know that there’s an identifiable “Canadian Rock” sound as such; seems to me we frequently just copy the Americans or Brits. But there’s likely a hockey-arena’s worth of amazing stuff from the last 30 years that I’m unfamiliar with, like that Mary Margaret O’Hara album that @Ron Nasty presented last week (month? year??)

Haha OK, now it’s gonna be you, me, @QuarryMan and maybe others all recommending a dozen different titles for listening!
I’m listening to this sticky piece of nonsense by Syreeta Wright, with significant input from Stevie Wonder; they’re recently divorced (1974) but remain friends, and will collaborate further. For now, this delectably gooey melody is yet another exhibit in my Stevie-is-Paul theory

Funny you should mention Tragically Hip as I just heard about them earlier in a video about Canada.

Ah yes, we played that at a Halloween party. Trust me, my singing ain’t as good as Dolores O’Riordan’s, but it was fun nonetheless
Anyway, it’s Get The Led Out Saturday for me so I’m listening to the Mighty Zeppelin’s smashing debut.

Finally gave a listen to M83’s Dead Souls, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts which I have heard called ‘My Bloody Valentine but with synths’. I enjoyed it, but I think it’ll need some more listening before it clicks.

Am quite tired so am wrapping up this evening with Norah Jones.
Will pick ‘the’ song from her Feels Like Home album but a lot of her stuff makes me happy.
My dad used to play an album of hers, Come Away With Me, a whole lot when I was a kid… it gives me weird early-childhood nostalgia-twingles when I hear her name.

Well, I’m watching the one world thing, saw gaga and paul and stevie and elton, and I was listening to Syreeta Wright with intention of maybe writing a word or two…but first I have to do some further research by listening to Linda’s “Wide Prairie” a couple of times. I’ve never heard it!

So, I saw that the 50th anniversary of McCartney’s release was yesterday, so I decided to finally listen to it for the first time. Yes, please nobody kill me, up till this evening I had never listened to McCartney. I’m actually exceptionally unlearned in the topic of Beatles solo careers, I’m afraid.
