Listened to a couple of albums I hadn’t heard before the past couple of days. Firstly, this wonderful free jazz record by Andrew Hill, “Compulsion”
Ooh, fabulous record! Having John Gilmore on tenor for that date seems to have put Hill in a kind of Sun Ra mood; he didn’t usually play with that kind of arrhythmic pounding style. His other Blue Note albums of the period aren’t quite so free-form as this one; they’re quirky, with ever-shifting instrumentation and only mildly avant-garde. “Point of Departure” (with giants Eric Dolphy and Tony Williams in the lineup) is my favourite.
I’ll give it a go, thanks! I’ve been meaning to return to Dolphy’s work as a leader at some point, too. I did really enjoy Out to Lunch when I gave it a go, at least in the sense that one can enjoy such a weird sonic experience. I must confess I didn’t pay a great deal of attention to Hill’s actual playing on Compulsion, I’ll have to give it another spin after PoD.

lovelyritametermaid, Von BonteeI've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Yep, that was my thinking too when I first read the musicians on the cover it: that the presence of Dolphy, Williams and bassist Richard Davis make it sound vaguely like “Out To Lunch” (recorded same day as “Can’t Buy Me Love “, can’t forget! ) It’s a true tragedy that Eric and Tony (18 years old) only ever recorded together on the two occasions, they were both such revolutionaries…)
…anyways, when I haven’t been hunkered down listening to Stevie Wonder the last few days, I’ve been playing cards with Mom Bontee while spinning tunes we both like: Lovin’ Spoonful (Daydream and Hums Of… albums), Coasters/Robins on shuffle, Bangles, Martha & the Vandellas, the Shangri-Las, and Johnny Cash (at Folsom Prison.)

Christmas has come for RN. New Dylan! So that is what I’m currently listening to:
Greetings to my fans and followers with gratitude for all your support and loyalty across the years.
This is an unreleased song we recorded a while back that you might find interesting.
Stay safe, stay observant and may God be with you.
Bob Dylan
Great track, sounds like an outtake from Tempest. 17 minutes!!!! 2:17:
The Beatles are comin’, they’re gonna hold your hand
Slide down the banister, go get your coat
Ferry across the Mersey and go for the throat
Sounds like it fits with the songs Tempest and Roll On John.
It’s beautiful.

After watching video of the rowdy crowd at the 2018 Carolina Rebellion, I hereby dedicate Wild World to @Beatlebug
Haha, as I’m sure y’all know, I was in that crowd! About 15 feet from the stage, if I recall, in front of the bassist, Chris Wolstenholme, jumping on some poor guy’s toes and yelling along to all the songs till my voice was hoarse
BEST. CONCERT. EVER.
Listening to “Wild World” now
