Ah beautiful NC (birthstate of Coltrane himself!)
This is really solid for a Motown offering from 1965 – not just two hits and filler. It kicks! (Plus, I seem to remember an existing photo of holding a copy, but my memory may be substituting it for a different LP…)

It’s been an odd day for me, music-wise. When I woke up all I wanted to do was blast Kanye, so I stuck on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and then once I found out the uni was stopping classes Sleater-Kinney’s song ‘Modern Girl’ appeared in my head for some reason, so I listened to The Woods in its entirety, but now I’m inexplicably in the mood for some Les Miserables, hence me now listening to this –

I absolutely adore Les Mis ! But anytime its mentioned, I’m always reminded of how my friend and I watched the movie in The Back Seat of [Her] Car and sobbed together for like 20 minutes.
Anyhoo, I’m currently social distancing and listening to…

Came across this neat article highlighting some of the black classical composers and musicians who history has forgotten about, so now I’m listening to Florence Price’s Symphony No. 1, and enjoying it quite a bit. She was the first African-American woman to have her work performed by a major symphony orchestra, which is pretty cool.
I don’t know nearly enough about classical music to be able to properly understand what I’m hearing or separate it from other works I’ve heard, but as far as my limited taste goes, it’s very enjoyable.

Ooh a Les Mis post. I’m not a fan of the film. Too many actors who are not that great at singing, singing songs that only singers can do justice (I’ll just say the word sing one more time, sing).
The only people that I’m ok with, that were in it were Hugh Jackman, Samantha Barks (and even then she’s far from my favourite Éponine), Aaron Tveit and Anne Hathaway who completely changed I Dreamed a Dream to a way that suited her and really benefited the song so thumbs up to her. Everyone else I’d change. I wish the entire thing had been made with theatre actors- John Owen-Jones, Earl Carpenter, Katie Hall- in fact we should just have had the 2010 Dream The Dream/25th Anniversary Cast and I would have been satisfied.
Of course then whether it would have drawn any kind of significant audience is the big question.
Anyhoo, on a similar musical theatre vein, currently listening to (Boggess’ over-enunciation and trying to pronounce words to make it sound more ‘older’ annoys me a bit but her voice is just so gorgeous I can overlook it):

Anybody have any recommendations for artists with big + interesting discographies to immerse oneself in? Given that a lot of us are probably going to be spending a lot of time indoors with little to do, projects like that are especially fun.
Today I’ve been trying to finish Björk’s discography, mostly lesser well known tracks from the later albums that I hadn’t got round to hearing in full yet. The 2000s and 2010s have both been an odd time for her career, with some of her most experimental work ever. I’d never really much liked Medúlla, her album constructed almost entirely of the human voice with little to no instruments, but I gave it a couple of listens today, and it’s really grown on me, in particular this track:
