My dad and I were just watching The Song Remains The Same (we got a little less than halfway through, stopped after “The Rain Song,” which is as fine a place to pause as any ) and so I’m listening to the soundtrack now, because I have a serious Led Zeppelin addiction and “I really need so much/I have to have sO mUcH!”

Thanks for reminding me about this album. I knew he had been working on it, but his passing wiped my memory of it. I want it for my collection, so just fired up the Prime.
I hadn’t listened to it either until the other day. I really enjoyed it.
I finished my Peter Tork tribute by listening to Headquarters and some assorted Monkees songs that feature Peter.

My acquaintances from another music board/thread are listening to the chronological recorded works of Sun Ra and the many editions of his Arkestra; they’ve started with his earliest work, as an R&B sideman in 1953, to the first album proper in 1956, and are now up to 1965. And they’re documenting the whole thing on a handy ongoing playlist!
Amazing progression of sounds over these years. The earliest stuff sounded like musicians reaching out to the stars; by 1964-5 they sound like they’re from them.

That sounds really cool. I might try to follow along. The Arkestra can be a challenging listen. The full entourage played at the college in my hometown (San Jose State) in the late 1960s. I sat outside with some other broke people and they really shook the place up (literally shook the ground). I did not know what I was hearing. To tell the truth it took me a long time to be able to fully appreciate jazz (even longer to even be able to hear the experimental genre as music). I kick myself when I think I saw Miles Davis as an opener for the Grateful Dead and I could not tell the difference between the musicians warm-up and the actual performance. Kind of like Miles, Sun Ra produced such a wide range of music. I have a few albums and the one I listen to the most is named God Is More Than Love Can Ever Be. It’s pretty straight forward, piano driven sounds but it really moves…

Cool reminiscences there, SB – I love that folks like yourself and Wigwam and intotheskywithdiamonds are around to share their tales of seeing giants like the Dead or Hendrix or Miles while they still walked the earth. And played the same ballrooms! I witnessed the late-stage Arkestra play two shows in a jazz club in Toronto in 1991 (shook Sonny’s hand!) and they were fine, but obviously 1991 is not 1969.

…also, thanks for alerting me to that “More Than Love” album’s existence (a simple piano/bass/drums trio album! who knew?)
