Just begun listening to a 2-hour episode of a “Classic Albums” podcast. The subject: John Coltrane and his “A Love Supreme” album.
(Oh, yeah: Album recorded 9 December, 1964…Paul visits Ringo in hospital (tonsils finally removed), and George and Pattie fly to Bahamas for holiday, having visited Ringo themselves the day before…)

Ooh, might have to give that a listen I find it so fascinating how for Psalm Trane played a note for every word in the poem he’d written.
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

I was thinking about that very fact earlier! I tried to test it out once by following along syllable-by-syllable but found it too hard.
Podcaster puts the album in the context of his earlier work, and so play a bit of his Miles and Monk stuff, as well as things he was listening to at the time (including Ravi Shankar)

If you do like John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme”, I would like to recommend you another jazz album which might interest you. The name of said LP is Sun Ra’s “Jazz In Silhouette”. A little bit of trivia: Sun Ra claims to be the reincarnation of an alien from Saturn. Hopefully that little bit of trivia might give you an idea on the identity of the album, as well as a little bit of insight into the mind of Sun Ra.
Do give it a listen and tell me on what you think. Highlights (at least to me) are “Enlightenment”, “Velvet”, “Ancient Aiethiopa” and “Blues at Midnight”.

CakeMaestor, thanks for the recommendation! But let me blow your mind a little: Not only do I know about Sun Ra (fan for nearly 30 years), I saw his Arkestra play live in Toronto back in 1991, and shook HIS HAND afterwards! The man from Saturn was weakened, and in his final years; he had suffered an earthly stroke some months previously and was in a wheelchair, in which he sat at his piano; he didn’t play at all on the first of the two nights I attended. But he still took my hand and offered a silent smile on the second night. It was one of the thrills of my life.

I might have to listen to that… Sun Ra’s stuff has never properly clicked for me. I’ve enjoyed some of what I’ve heard, like Sleeping Beauty, but I think I need to keep listening to appreciate it.

Well, the Arkestra released something like 80 albums (some better than others) over their lifetime, so there’s bound to be some more out there for you somewhere, Qman! Like, they begin as a somewhat quirky big band in the 50s; then begin to embrace the avant-garde more and more as the 60s develop. By the late 70s, they can combine those varying approaches with occasional disco and dance beats; and by the time the end is approaching, the conservative late 80s, we’ve come full circle back to classic traditional big-band arrangements. And along the way are a few side solo things – piano records, and at least one experiential all-Moog creation. “Space is the Place” is a popular LP, you may like that one.
I don’t remember if I’ve heard the “Silhouette” LP, CakeMaestor; certainly not in the last decade (I had dozens of Sun Ra LPs on my old dead computer), but I’m gonna listen now…
…EDIT: …and I’m really liking it, thanks. The extended tracks (including the fast blues and “Aetheopia”) are the highlights so far.

Currently listening to Charles Mingus’s “Let My Children Hear Music”, for about the third time this month. I really like this LP a lot, though it’s a shame I cannot support the publisher directly by buying a vinyl record.
Are there any Mingus fans here? Would certainly like to know.

Quite a few MIngus fans here too! Myself, QuarryMan, Tony Japanese, Ron Nasty come to mind, and I know there are others I can’t think of right now.
I posted “Shoes of the Fisherman’s Wife” in this very thread thread a few months back, when the “Jazz Classics” TV music channel played it, but I haven’t owned the “Let My Children…” album in years; frankly, it never was a great favourite.

Let My Children Hear Music is my second favourite Mingus record of the four or five I’ve heard, really awesome atmosphere. It’s hard to describe his music really, you just sort of have to hear it.
