Attempting to get into Frank Zappa at the moment, having previously enjoyed his ‘Hot Rats’ and ‘Apostrophe’ albums, but not much else, so I’ve made a playlist of his most celebrated songs according to various articles. The ones I’ve enjoyed most so far have been Montana, Joe’s Garage, Valley Girl, My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama and Inca Roads.

Yes, Zappa freaks routinely rank that “Easter Hay” solo as one of his finest.
If you liked the mostly instrumental “Hot Rats”, I’d suggest you check out his similar two 1972 exercises in large-band jazz-rock fusion, “Waka/Jawaka” and “The Grand Wazoo”. (He’d pretty clearly been listening to recent Miles Davis)
(But don’t get me started on Frank or I’ll name about 13 albums that you “need”. And about 27 to “avoid at all costs” Plus many in between.)

Thanks, I’ll make that my next excursion into his career, since I just played Hot Rats and loved it more than I had done the previous times. Though that list of 13 albums would come in very useful if you have time to divulge
Currently listening to the new Injury Reserve album, which appeared yesterday. It’s a very experimental hip hop project that I’m finding enjoyable and jarring in equal measures.

JL/POB. Because I just watched the Imagine : John Lennon documentary and have been overwhelmed by a huge wave of miserable emotion. I need his voice for comfort, or at least empathy.
Edit about 2 hrs later: Now I’m on Bob Dylan’s Roll On John. And there’s this silly girl crying in the middle of the night.

Damnit, I pondered over the spelling for ages before I decided on that one guess I should’ve just looked it up
On topic, there has been a whole load of albums come out in the last couple of days (including the new Carly Rae Jepsen album, my not-so-guilty pleasure) but best of all is the new Tyler, the Creator album, IGOR. He’s also been allowed back in the UK after being banned several years ago, which is exciting

In prep for deciding which 13 Zappa/Mothers albums to recommend-as-threatened, I’m playing the remarkable debut, Freak Out! The 2nd double album in rock (coupla months after Bob Dylan), this is one of two albums not self-produced: Credit goes to Tom Wilson, who also worked with Bob Dylan, John Coltrane, Simon & Garfunkel, Sun Ra, The Velvet Underground, Cecil Taylor…First album is mostly regular-ish pop-rock-soul radio songs (usually sung by Ray Collins, who had a really nice soft voice), all with a huge ugly greasy moustache on top; second has a hard blues-rocking commentary on the Watts Riots, plus two lengthy avant-garde exercises in tape loops, rhythm, electronics and spoken-word silliness. An immensely important and influential record, a favourite of Paul’s. I can’t call it my favourite album of 1966 (many competitors that year!), but I could.
Released June 27, 1966…North to Alaska! (and Hamburg and Japan)

Released 40 years ago on this day, Bowie’s oddest oddity (in my opinion):David Bowie – Lodger (1979)
I still need to hear most of this one…
Has it got the same mix of songs/instrumentals as the other two in the trilogy?

No, it’s got more weirdass lyrical things. It’s really really eclectic, kind of scattered actually. Quite a trip, I recommend it.

Been while since I’ve heard this, I forgot how good it is.
Also, the Add Reply button wasn’t working when I tried to make this post– I had to quote and delete Beatlebug’s post to open up a reply box, Beach-Boys -thread-style.
Edit: And it would appear that the video is invisible?

Have reached 2 August 1965, and Bob has just moved onto 12 takes of Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues after 10 of Highway 61 Revisited.
Such a beautiful song. I love the feel of resignation and surrender of the last lines…
I’m going back to New York City

Had similar problems as @50yearslate with this post.
EDIT: The video does play if you press the blank space where it should be, as does Fiddy’s. Seems to be working like a link and taking you to it on FB YT.

First of all, whichever genius figured out this shortcut in the Beach Boys thread deserves a whole cartload of apples.
Second of all, I was listening to Reality, but when I got to Try Some Buy Some I felt compelled to switch to George so I’m now listening to Living In The Material World , specifically the masterpiece formally known as That Is All.
