I just began my first listen-through of Blackstar.
OoOoOoOoOoh! How did you like it? It’s pretty intense. I saved it until the very end of my Bowie journey and was glad I did. I don’t think I’ve listened to it since… I’m still saving it for something, I guess…
Right now I am listening to Heathen because I like it

I liked it very much. It’ll probably be more meaningful once I’ve learned more about David, but it was very good.

One thing I love about Blackstar is both its influences and the way it draws upon them. The creators cited Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly (released the year before) as well as the work of Boards of Canada and Death Grips.
Here’s a few tracks by said artists that I think influenced them in particular.
Kendrick Lamar – Mortal Man. Particularly note the use of jazzy vocal harmonies, acoustic guitar and the discordant horn parts throughout. This one bears a great similarity to the title track of Blackstar.
Boards of Canada – Music Is Math
Death Grips – I’ve Seen Footage
The end result of all these influences, as well as Bowie’s own creative instincts, was an album that can only be described as strange, or otherworldly. There’s little rock and roll, with more focus on this kind of nightmarish fusion. Bowie could have made his final album very somber, straightforward and emotional, but I think it’s much more fitting for him to have made a dense, experimental and somewhat bewildering conclusion to his life and career instead.
Now I’ve gone and gotten myself both emotional and with a strong desire to play Blackstar again

He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

As much as I love Blackstar I haven’t actually read much into the making of the album. I should really do this.

It’s very fascinating, @Elementary Penguin , especially how Bowie cast the musicians. I think the influences are the most interesting part, though. The fact that Bowie was listening to and appreciating the artists that are as boundary pushing to my generation (Kendrick, Death Grips) as he was to his generation, and that he drew upon the work of those artists to create his final masterpiece, is so mindblowing to me.

Imagine (the album) for what is probably the third time today. So brilliant.

I was listening to ‘Mr Bellamy’ by Paul McCartney , but of course now I’m going to have to join the Bowie-party.
So…
The Next Day – David Bowie (2013)
Terrible album cover, but it’s a pretty good album. (And it took me like five whole minutes to decide which one I wanted to listen to… I have a bad case of album-indecisiveness )

You don’t like the Next Day cover? I love that one! I think it’s genius, and only someone like Bowie would come up with an idea like that.

I’m listening to the Dead Kennedy’s debut album, Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables. I’ve been getting more into punk lately, and DK are one of the best bands I’ve heard.

Ehhhhmmmgh. Maybe explain to me why it’s genius and I might appreciate it more, but I’m sorry, it just looks ugly to me. Aesthetically, y’know. (Also, “Heroes” is one of my favourite album covers ever [surprise surprise] so it makes me sad to see it covered up. )
I will, however, allow that it’s pretty brilliant how he slowly faded from his album covers, starting as far back as Heathen (with his iconic eyebulbs covered up with milky-blind contacts), hiding behind a cartoon avatar on (ironically) Reality, covering his face with a white box on The Next Day, and finally disappearing altogether on Blackstar (). Apart from the last, it probably wasn’t deliberate, but it’s a cool connection.
