I was listening to the title track from Young Americans the other day… Surprisingly authentic take on soul from a British white guy, but then what else do we expect from Mr. Starman

Beatlebug, TheWalrusWasBrianI've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Yeah, I always forget about it amid the many masterpieces on The White Album . Another one I forgot about is Fixing A Hole , which I just heard. I really need to do this more oftennormally I listen to the same albums/songs over and over and I forget about all the lovely songs I’ve been so rudely ignoring.
Love one another.

Never quite understood why soul played by white people is so sneered at, although I’ll grant that a Brit from Brixton is probably not going to have the kind of cultural prerequisite that one might expect in a soul artist — hence Bowie’s maintenance that his soul was plastic. He genuinely loved it, though, and immersed himself in it with single-minded determination, plus he got the best musicians to play with him (as usual) — never one to do things by halves.
Anyway, I’m hardly a connoisseur of soul music (Young Americans is pretty much the only example I’m familiar with ) and I am huge Bowie fan, so I’m not a little biased.

Going from Ooh! My Soul to We Can Work It Out to I’ve Got A Feeling is reminding me of the extensive capabilities of Paul’s magnificent voice. I refuse to believe that there is anything he couldn’t sing (in his prime, at least). And now Lovely Rita is starting… Paul is amazing.
also, I only just noticed that John says “ooh, my soul” at the end of I’ve Got A Feeling . What a coincidence.

Well, I am very relieved. I’ve been on a George kick for a very long time, but my Beatlethon today has placed me firmly in a state of Beatlemania.

Inspired by Beatlebug and Walry, I listened to Hunky Dory and The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust for the first time yesterday and I have to say, they’re pretty amazing
