Currently I am attempting to tackle this monumental slice of madness. It’s so insanely wild, I love it and hate it in equal measures.
Yep, that’s a pretty abrasive listen, all right! I play it maybe once a year (if that) – about as often as “Cambridge 1969” from “Unfinished Music #2”

Mother Nature’s Son from the Esher Demos.
Such a beautiful song! For some reason I’ve never really been impressed by it until recently.

I usually reach a certain point about 10 minutes into each piece where it actually sounds pretty calm and peaceful. I figure if I keep listening then eventually it’ll click properly for me.
In a similar vein, here’s another abrasive and aggressive album that I’ve been playing a lot recently (and right now)
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

I love the first side of Pepper because all the intros to the songs are so great, particularly Lucy and Getting Better .
Now relaxing with some Stevie

I’ll Be On My Way is one of the many gems from the BBC performances. Hard To Believe they couldn’t find room for it on an album. Imagine Beatles For Sale with I’ll Be On My Way on side two.

The reason they didn’t include it on any Beatles release is probably because they wrote it for someone else, the only time they recorded a song they originally wrote for someone else being I Call Your Name for The Beatles Second Album in the US and the Long Tall Sally EP in the UK.

Afraid it wasn’t originally written for someone else, DO. I’ll Be on My Way was written in around 1961, long before John and Paul were consciously writing songs for anyone but themselves. There were originally very few of the songs they “gave away” that were written for someone else, and they did sometimes also crop up on Beatles albums: Misery was written for Helen Shapiro, given to Kenny Lynch, and appeared on PPM ; I Wanna Be Your Man was an idea they had, finished off in response to a request for a song for the Stones, and was then given to Ringo for his WTB vocal the day after the Stones had recorded their version.
I Call Your Name was not written for Billy J. either – another early song, like IBOMW, as John recalled in 1980:
The first part had been written before Hamburg even. It was one of my first attempts at a song.
The truth is many of the early Lennon-McCartney songs that were given away dated back to the early days in Liverpool and which they felt they’d progressed beyond, though in a few cases they decided to record and release their own versions.

I think Blond has become my favourite album at this point. So beautiful, feels like a modern RnB take on Brian Wilson style songwriting. Since September, I’ve played tracks from it 292 times, according to my LastFM account.

Blond is great. I don’t agree with the Brian Wilson comp, but I do admit i was stunned by the way the instruments were arranged and surprised by the creative sounds that were on Blond. Channel Orange is better I think but Blond was a worthy successor. One of the best albums of the decade no doubt.

For me Ivy, Pink + White, Nights and White Ferrari could all have been Pet Sounds era Beach Boys songs, if you scaled the language back to Brian’s style and tightened up the arrangements a bit. White Ferrari even quotes Here There And Everywhere , which as we know was directly inspired by God Only Knows. I think Blonde is definitely better than Channel Orange, but they’re also vastly different, since CO is mostly straight forward RnB pop, whereas Blonde is way more abstract and ambient.

Different grooves. Can’t see any Frank Ocean songs actually fitting in on Pet Sounds. Come on man.
I’m listening to the Imagine outtakes and alternate mixes. I’m reading the book from the box set and will watch the studio footage afterward.
