Today, inspired by fellow Forumpudlians, I did a Beatles marathon! (British studio albums and singles in chronological order) It was so fantastic, against my expectations I profoundly enjoyed every second of it! It’s so mindblowing to experience them pushing boundary after boundary and you always think that it can’t get any better Now And Then they release another masterpiece! During the whole marathon I had the feeling I listened to A Day In The Life – it was getting better all the time, the tension rose until Abbey Road was the final piano chord. Let It Be was Sgt Pepper The canon’s Inner Groove.
Norwegian Wood was like an epiphany for me, suddenly I felt there is something in the air, something fascinating but dangerous. You could tell that everything would be different from now on. The way Paul’s basslines took off like a rocket after Help ! was stunning as well.
I know it’s quite obvious that the Beatles improved during their career but as I listened to everything in chronological order today, I only fully understood what an extraordinary and adventurous path they chose to walk with their music! Suddenly, there were also so many connections between different songs apparent and everything!
All in all, it was such an intriguing insight and a strong reminder why the Beatles are my favourite band of all time. No other band would leave me that happy after a whole day of housework and would evoke such a strong wish to redo the marathon immediately.

Maybe I should try listening to their full catalogue all at once someday. Since you didn’t mention it, did you listen to Yellow Submarine before or after The Beatles AKA the White Album .
If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

I listened to Yellow Submarine before The Beatles/The White Album but I left out the second side. Also, if you do the marathon, could you describe your experiences afterwards? You probably would pay attention to totally different things, it would be interesting to compare.

The stunning Maggot Brain by Funkadelic.
Recorded in a single take, Eddie Hazel’s guitar is stunning – a cross between Jimi Hendrix and David Gilmour.

I don’t know about that, their solo careers are inferior to The Beatles. For one, Paul’s solo work is more pop than the rock he produced with The Beatles. Also, Ringo’s solo career involves him singing on every song and considering his voice is not liked by as many as John, Paul, and George’s are, liking his music don’t come easy.
I do agree though that The Beatles got better as they progressed through their career, every album being an improvement to the last with 1968’s The Beatles being their best.

I thought you didn’t listen to the Beatles solo works?
Why does Paul’s pop songs mean that he’s now inferior to the Beatles?
Ringo actually has some great songs, even for me, though I dislike his singing/character.
No comment on George?
No comment on John?
Maybe, before you start jumping to conclusions that everything the Beatles did as individuals is inferior to everything the Beatles did as a group. You should listen to the full scope of Paul’s, John’s, George’s, and Ringo’s solo music. (Some of which I prefer over the Beatles’ music.)

To be fair, I haven’t really listened to a lot of their solo material.
Anyways, one of the main reasons why I think their solo careers suck when compared to The Beatles is because one of my favorite things about The Beatles is their 3 part harmonies. No one was better at making great 3 part harmonies than John, Paul, and George, just listen to a song like Nowhere Man or Because , those 3 part harmonies are so beautiful, I can’t think of a single forum member who would disagree with that but as solo artists, you can’t have those lush beautiful 3 part harmonies The Beatles did so well and intricately because you need John, Paul, and George, to get them right.
Another thing I dislike about their solo careers is that out of the songs I’ve listened to, they either suck or I wish The Beatles performed on them.

CSN harmonies are lretty damn good too, but you are right. Not as good as The Beatles. One thing I like about the solo stuff is the creative freedom that came with separating from the other 3. All of them explored new territory that wouldn’t have been able to be released as Beatles music.

If there’s 3 bands that have great harmonies, it’s The Beatles, The Beach Boys , and Queen.

Oh The Beach Boys have the best harmonies by far, but I thought we were talking 3 part harmony.
