I do suppose it’s time to expand my prog/art rock palette beyond the usual Yes, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, and ELP. I’ve never really listened to much Genesis before, but apparently it is “essential prog”. From what I’ve heard so far, it’s pretty decent. I just finished “The Musical Box” from Nursery Cryme. I’m not a huge fan of Peter Gabriel’s voice, but eh, maybe it’ll grow on me.

Oh god, you haven’t listened to Genesis?! Have you started from the beginning of their discography then?
Their early stuff is hard to choke down the first time (ESPECIALLY Nursery Cryme) but it gets more manageable later. Be warned though, the prog part of them starts dying pretty fast after Wind And Wuthering. (After Phil Collins took over the vocals. Not that he doesn’t do a good job!)
Man, love Genesis!

@Evangeline
Yeah, somehow, I’ve never listened to much Genesis at all. I think one of my friends brought over Selling England By The Pound one time, but we didn’t finish the whole album and I wasn’t really paying attention to it. I liked ‘The Musical Box’ quite a bit though. From what I’ve heard, I don’t think the post Wind And Wuthering stuff would appeal to me very much, since I’m not much of a fan of Phil Collins’ voice and I don’t like it when progressive bands like this go to a more pop-oriented style.
And yes, ‘Still, You Turn Me On’ is awesome. So is ‘C’est La Vie’ actually. Love the accordion in that one.

I would have to go with Trilogy as my favorite ELP song. It has a good mix of freaky and beautiful. There are however lots of other strong contenders (Tarkus, Hoedown, Karn Evil 9, etc.)
Currently listening: Fleetwood Mac- Tusk (in glorious vinyl)

I’m a huge fan of all eras of Genesis. They really require active listening. It’s not the kind of thing you have on while talking to friends. You need to put on headphones and visualize things.
My favorite period of Genesis right now is actually 1974-1981 (from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway through Abacab).
Post-Abacab is good, too, it’s just a different animal.
In my opinion, no one should dismiss Phil Collins Genesis without having heard Abacab, Duke, And Then There Were Three, and Wind and Wuthering.
And it’s worthy of note that Phil Collins is not actually responsible for taking Genesis in a more pop direction. He just happened to be the singer during that time.

I’ve still yet to explore post-1976 Genesis, I’m kind of afraid of their later stuff. I’ll probably listen to it soon, since I like Phil Collins over all. (Especially his drumming.)
True, I think the departure of Steve Hackett was the start of their pop rock era.
I prefer early Genesis ( (From Genesis To Revelations, Trespass, Foxtrot, etc… but I still like all their albums that I’ve heard.) I can’t really think of another band that’s anything like them, they’re wholly unique.
Anyway, after that ramble.

Listening through to the first five tracks recorded by my friend Ray’s band for their 2017 album: covers of What a Difference a Day Makes (cool and jazzy); September in the Rain (again, cool and jazzy, nice swing feel to it); Blue Suede Shoes and Summertime Blues (Ray and his band can do this stuff blindfolded, but they don’t, and these are stonkingly good takes) and Tainted Love (ah, I dislike it hugely – hate Ray’s vocal. Oh dear! That could be an interesting conversation!).
Still, four out of five ain’t bad.

What Ray is this because I looked up Ray Charles and just as I suspected he was dead.
I find that offensive. I find that incredibly rude. Ray Charles was/is not the only musician named Ray. Had you asked politely I would have pointed you to my friend’s website, and the many videos they have on YT.
You didn’t though.
If you doubt the existence of Ray’s band, and think I’m talking bullshit, @Ahhh Girl met Ray and heard him and his band perform on her first day in the UK in 2015.
