I’m listening to my 1954-1984, 88 hour Elvis, Beatles and solo Beatles playlist. The Beatles should make their first appearance with Tony Sheridan in several hours.

Day two of hearing this at work all day, and I’m up to 1963 and Please Please Me . So far it’s really interesting hearing Elvis and The Beatles next to each other chronologically.

Tony Sheridan was obviously influenced by Elvis’s vocal style.

Now I’m up to the beginning of 1965. It’s clear that 1964 is when The Beatles overtook Elvis. Locked into his movie contracts, Elvis was churning out mediocre soundtracks by the time The Beatles really hit the scene. Playing The Beatles side by side chronologically with Elvis, I can see how people felt about Elvis’s career during the 60’s.  Elvis’s career picks back up in 1968, but by then I will have John and Yoko’s experimental stuff to get through.

I really enjoyed hearing the two Beatles BBC anthologies today. I’m glad we have those.

BBC is really great. I bought those before I had any pre-Help albums, and I played the hell out of it. I was honestly disappointed by the studio versions of songs like Baby Its You and I’m A Loser when I first heard them on the album. No compare to the BBC live versions.

I know, those recordings have a lot of energy. You can imagine Hamburg or The Cavern when you hear them.

John once said (I think it was a TV interview in 1975) that Elvis popularized black music for white people, and The Beatles took that black music and made it even more white. I thought that was an interesting comment.

At any rate, you can hear plenty of both country and R & B influences in those BBC recordings.

I’m giving The Endless River another whack right now– the last (and first) time I tried to listen to it, I got bored halfway through and went off to something else, but now I’m a more hardcore Floyd fan so I am enjoying it more this time around. a-hard-days-night-george-4

It would make great working music– not very distracting ahdn_paul_01

I really enjoyed hearing the two Beatles BBC anthologies today. I’m glad we have those.

I’m up to February 1967 now with Elvis’s How Great Thou Art.

While Elvis stagnated with more silly soundtracks, The Beatles grew by leaps and bounds. Help ! was a masterpiece, Rubber Soul brought more weirdness to the table, and Revolver was simply out of this world. You don’t usually see bands evolve like this. One exception is Talk Talk (you should check them out if you don’t know how they went from pop to post rock).

The Beatles mastered the rock genre and then brought it to another level.

Elvis did seem to be stepping up his game a little after meeting The Beatles by adding a Bob Dylan cover and two other excellent songs to his Spinout soundtrack.

Beginning in 1964 Elvis began to study kriya yoga, Theosophy, numerology and the occult. He even considered dropping out and becoming a monk. He came to believe that the Ascended Masters guided his career and that he was to uplift humanity through his music. How Great Thou Art (don’t be fooled into thinking it’s just a collection of hymns) is an outgrowth of this spiritual search. It’s a great album.

John remarked that Elvis died when he went into the army, but what he and others fail to recognize is Elvis’s true genius. He was not just a master of rock but of every American genre: rock, R & B, country, gospel, pop–you name it, Elvis sang it and gave it his own signature sound.

Okay, end of rambling.
