I’m currently giving Paul’s latest a first listen, and I’m quite impressed so far.

I’ve been listening to this 60-cd Elvis box set all week.Other recent purchases: Warsaw (early Joy Division), Yoko “Yes I’m A Witch Too.”
That box looks great, it’s on my “one day” list.

Its good but there is something missing, especially during the instrumental passages.
Here (from 24:42) they play it better, tho most of the instrumental passages are gone.

@trcanberra, it’s really nice. You should get it. I just wish it had come out a couple of years earlier, because I’ve already bought almost all of these albums. But then I don’t mind having multiple editions because most of them have different remastering or mixes.
The book in the box is really nice, printed on good quality paper with lots of photos. There are no inner sleeves, but the cardboard doesn’t seem to damage the discs when you remove them.

I listened to
yesterday, and now I’m listening to
Very interesting records, both of them, although the latter is better-produced.

See Emily Play is playing in me head at the moment although I haven’t listened to it in ages (this morning)sigh butterfly sighed wistfully
That song evokes so many emotions and places me right back into the 60s flower children vibration. Also sadness and a bit of dread as dear Syd seems to be looking into a crystal ball and seeing his future.
@Beatlebug spoke sagaciously
Those early singles and the album that followed them always make me want to don some psychedelic paisley and velveteen candy-stripes and go larking about yodelling ‘I’VE GOT A BIKE, YE CAN RIDE IT IF YOU LIKE’ at anyone who will listen. <img class=”spSmiley” style=”margin:0″ title=”a-hard-days-night-john-6″ alt=”a-hard-days-night-john-6″ src=”https://i1.wp.com/www.beatlesbible.com/wp/wp-content/forum-smileys/ahdn_john_06.gif?w=1200″ data-recalc-dims=”1″ />
And yes indeed, poor Syd <img class=”spSmiley” style=”margin:0″ title=”a-hard-days-night-paul-10″ alt=”a-hard-days-night-paul-10″ src=”https://i0.wp.com/www.beatlesbible.com/wp/wp-content/forum-smileys/ahdn_paul_10.gif?w=1200″ data-recalc-dims=”1″ /> Shine on, you welcome-wearing truth-and-delusion-mining painter-piper-prisoner crazy diamond– I’m sure he’s joined Lucy in the sky.SEP– the chorus particularly– is that late sixties philosophy in a nutshell, isn’t it? I wasn’t there, of course, but from what I’ve read, it’s exactly like that.

Yip. That’s my take anyways.
Smileys have gone mad so they have been snipped from Silly Girl’s original post.

Very well said SG, I like how you describe the many facets of Syd. The song also contains some dark tones (Emily tries but misunderstands/Float on a river forever and ever/Gazing through trees in sorrow) which were part of the 60s too. Being a flower child basically meant you were breaking the law on a daily basis and letting everyone know by the way you looked. That on top of the draft (here in the states anyway) lead to an undeniable sense of paranoia beneath the celebrations.
