@Necko I have The Fragile and Downward Spiral on my list of albums to check out because I’ve heard NIN is good. Are those the two to start with?
I’m a massive Trent Reznor fanboy so I feel obliged to offer my $0.02 here. Definitely start out with those two albums and Year Zero for a taste of modern NIN. Nearly all of NIN’s albums have been followed up by a remix album (take them or leave them), but I strongly suggest checking out Things Falling Apart after you’ve listened to The Fragile. It got terrible reviews, but I think it’s pretty great as far as hit-or-miss remix albums go. Plus it has a great cover of the Gary Numan song “Metal” which was a highlight for me.
Anyway, what am I listening to right now? Ash Ra Tempel. It’s a trippy German space rock kind of day.

I’m up to March 1969 in my Beatles mega-playlist. It sounds like they have totally lost it. I just heard Electronic Sound and now I’m hearing Yoko wail her way through Cambridge 1969.

I have a confession:
I’ve never listened to the Anthology albums.
*gasp*
…until now that is. To be honest, I’ve listened to some of the songs when I’ve come across them on YouTube, but today I listened to Anthology 1 and 2 in their entirety for the first time. I like “Real Love ” a lot more than when I first heard it some time ago, and I think I now prefer the alternate take(s) of “It’s Only Love ” to the final mix.
I’ll have to save Anthology 3 for tomorrow; I’m looking forward to it!

Certainly an interesting period in terms of experiments, if not results. When I was working through that period it took a lot of work to listen to everything twice (which I was trying to do to ‘give it a chance’). Now I’m only listening once and to selected items twice

I must admit I liked Anthology 1 the most and it was all (relatively) downhill from there – though I know a lot of folks here are the reverse and not so interested in the early stuff.

The problem as you go with the Anthology discs as you go thru is that a lot of the outtakes are very similar to the released versions and therefore aren’t as interesting. Apple could have done a lot better in their selection process. We know there are better studio outtakes available as we have some (eg take 1 of ‘Hello, Goodbye ‘, ‘Revolution 1 ‘ take 20 RM1) and even the selection from the ‘Get Back ‘ rehearsals could have been better, especially if they had the guts to go into the Twickenham rehearsals for the heavy ‘Two of Us’.
So to keep this thread on track if anyone wants to continue a discussion on the Anthology series it it might be an idea to move it over to the relevant thread, posts can be copied over if that would help the matter.

Some general thoughts on my continuing 87-hour mega-playlist containing everything Beatles and solo from 1958-1980 (not sure where else to put this, except here, because I’m listening to it).
I think A Hard Day’s Night is like the perfection of the early Beatles.
With Help ! they begin to enter a new realm, with more acoustic numbers and the addition of keyboard.
I think they peak as a band with Sgt. Pepper . They are really on top of their game.
Then they enter more psychedelic weirdness with Magical Mystery Tour . I think I Am The Walrus is utter genius. But around this time (with Pepper actually) you can begin to see John’s output decline a bit, not necessarily in terms of quality, but consistency and frequency.
I think after this, they are not really a band. Also, in 1968-1969 there is just a lot of avant-garde weirdness in the solo material (John and Yoko, George) that can be grueling to listen to if you are not in the correct mindset.
The White Album is like a bunch of solo albums mixed together.
Let it Be is kind of sloppy, really. Around this time you can hear Paul as the saving grace of the band–his songs are the best. Across The Universe is one of John’s best songs, but it’s a couple of years old at this point.
Abbey Road is kind of like a surprise masterpiece that seems to come out of nowhere.
Then the next thing of real Beatles quality after that is All Things Must Pass (and I’m listening to that right now).
But Ringo’s first two solo albums are also good….
I think what John and Yoko were doing around this time was really ahead of its time. The guitar feedback and screaming is sort of like what people were doing 20-30 years later, in bands like Sonic Youth.

I am Listening to “Sister Golden Hair” By AmericaBest George Harrison imitation ever
Yah i know. But i have a soft spot for it even though it does sound like My Sweet Lord . I remember listening to it in a Florida Vacation a while back and i have loved it ever since. even though i had heard it before. Funny enough is i actually heard Sister Golden Hair before My Sweet Lord
I Think that Rolling Stone should do a cover story of The Rolling Stones covering "Like a Rolling Stone" or if a Type of Beetle was named after The Beatles.

We had a discussion about this elsewhere – George also misses parts of Something and Bob stumbles over the odd line as well.

Nice, we had Sister Golden Hair up that way ^ a bit back. Some folks felt that one sounded like George, a lot of folks felt this one sounded like Neil Young. What a versatile bunch those Americans were.

Until you-know-who walked in just as the old side 2 kicked off – she hates Bob so I turned it off rather than have another ‘discussion’. I’ll catch up with it tomorrow.

Ooh – evil thought is tempting.
I’ll save it until the gospel music starts up again and give it some competition
