Since when did beans and rice equal 'veggie'?

Well, I'm assuming “veggie” is short for “vegetarian” and not “vegetable.”

I got a microwavable bento box for Christmas, and I'm eager to try out some recipes (these two look good as sides). The problem is one of the recipes I want to try calls for Ponzu, which has bonito flakes AKA fish flakes. Does any one know of a good substitute?

I guess it depends on what those flakes are used for. I imagine that they could possibly be left out and/or replaced with either salt or seaweed?

I just bought myself a cookbook that has veggie burger recipes in it called “How To Cook Everything Vegetarian.” You didn't get that recipe from there, did you?

It's usually used to make dashi, which is a simple broth or stock. I did find a recipe that uses shiitake mushrooms instead of the fish. I also took a look at the ingredients for Kikkoman's ponzu, and it's pretty much soy sauce with lime juice. Sounds doable.

No, I just googled it and picked one that fit the ingredients I had on hand. What does your recipe have in it?

The basic one is made from oats and beans, there's one made with winter veggies (beets), spring veggies, and summer veggies, oh, and fall veggies, tofu (of course) with seaweed, and nut burgers. I haven't tried any, but those have got to be cheaper to make the second time round than any of the packaged kinds.

I've been a vegetarian for 4 years now.  When I first became a vegetarian, I kept eating fish until I could learn about what to eat better, but it may have extended the amount of time I was craving meat.  For a couple of months I had strong cravings, but I'd just eat some tuna or whatever and tough it out, so that's something to look out for.  I don't eat meat substitutes that often on their own, since they aren't the greatest for you, but my parents will often cook with them.  I can't really help with recipes, since I don't cook that often.  I eat lunch at school, and my parents usually cook dinner, but whatever you eat now can usually be made vegetarian with meat substitutes or a different recipe, well besides steak and other foods like that.  I usually just Google whatever I want to make.

Google is kind of godsend in that regard. brian-epstein I'm making this right now, minus the dried shrimp and fish cakes. You should take a cooking class if you can. It can be fun, and when you move out, take-away can get expensive.

I've seen that.  It's too bad I'm not that great at coming up with recipes, otherwise I'd enter.  The last time I tried I tried to make a sauce and added about 10 various spices + other stuff to a basic flour/water base (I forget what that's called…)  It wasn't that great. a-hard-days-night-paul-7

It's a bit off topic, but I just saw Scott Pilgrim vs. The World last night and there was a vegan enemy Scott had to defeat. He had special vegan powers, because as he said, “Being vegan makes you better than everyone else.” (said tongue-in-cheek, of course.)

Apparentlt the Vegan Police arrested him however for the various non-vegan acts he committed. 🙂
