Compasses were invented in China around 221 BCE. They were originally used as fortune-telling devices.

I was just going to post that I learned that Herb Reed who sang “Disco Inferno” in 1978 was a founding member of The Platters. But I just realised I don’t think this singer is Herb Reed or the singer of The Trammps who did the original version. The original Herb Reed had a really deep voice I think.
Anyone know who this singer is? It’s bugging me.

Going by their UK catalogue, The Who only released eight studio albums before Keith’s death, and three since, giving them a total of 11 studio albums.
Does this make them, of the big beasts, the one with the smallest catalogue commensurate to their time together? 11 albums doesn’t seem much for a fifty year + career.

Yeah, but there were huge breaks in that career. For one, the Who were more-or-less broken up from 1983 to 2005 and have been a touring-only band since 2007.

I was curious why we were listing 13 things in the baker’s dozen game, and not 12. I was looking up a word for 13 items to make a sarcastic response on the page about why we don’t call it that instead. On this journey I found that a baker’s dozen is in fact 13 items, or one more item than a normal dozen. I also learned that a baker’s dozen is also called a devil’s dozen, and that it was created for bakers to put in one extra item in their dozen in order to meet weight requirements so they would not be fined.

Don’t trust anyone who gives you chocolate that isn’t brown or white. I made chocolate at a sleepover with some friends, and we ended up making a batch of pumpkin spice flavored chocolate that was colored orange, and a batch of candy apple chocolate, which was green.
I’ve never regretted eating chocolate in my life much.

When the word “nice” first entered the English language in the 14th century it meant “foolish” or “stupid”.
By the 16th century, it had come to mean “very particular” or “finicky”.
It was not until the 18th century that it started to mean “pleasing” or “pleasant”.
Strange how much the meaning of words can change so much over time.

After an unbelievably long time of meaning to but not getting around to it, I FINALLY started learning Blackbird on the guitar. I’ve got the verse down pretty good.

You know those Mr. Men books that every kid since the 70’s reads in elementary school?
Yeah, those.
I learned two things about them today.
A. There’s an entire fandom wiki devoted to them.
B. There was a TV show about them that aired in pretty much the entire Western world.
I wonder if the wiki was started by a teacher.
