Now I learned if I ever became omnipotent and AppleScruffJunior got on my bad side, I would remove all languages expect American English then I would leave a memory of other languages but no knowledge of what those languages are.

My nephew has to study Irish and detests it as he finds it to be mostly suicidally depressing poetry, prose and stories from decades ago being taught by terribly frightful out-of-touch bores who have no idea how to relate to youngsters themselves or get across why Irish is relevant in the modern world. Their (the teachers) attitude is “you must learn this in this way because you must”. That’s not how to engage with anyone.

I always enjoy reading ASJ’s rants.

Also didn’t we agree that it was nigh impossible to translate ‘scruff’ into Irish? I’m curious to see what you will translate it to.

I will be Cailín Amaideach again though a-hard-days-night-john-6

Ahh thanks, good to know somebody actually reads it rather than skims past it 😛 I spent about 40 minutes writing it because I kept on changing stuff >.>

And yes ‘scruff’ doesn’t have a word in Irish*, we really miss out on synonyms in Irish- a thing is a thing in Irish, there isn’t twenty ways of saying it- which is good in a way for learning Irish but a pain for having to translate stuff.

Although we do have beautiful turns of phrase that you don’t have in English so it’s got its negatives and positives really.

Anyone who does the name changing thing on Paddy’s Day should do it on April 24th this year as well, it’ll be the centenerary of the start for our fight for independence (that and the fact that some the main buildings that our rebel leaders took over were a biscuit factory and a bakery, I personally think that’s genius), which we eventually got in 1922, albeit partial-independence but it’s good enough goddammit!

(Patriotic ASJ is patriotic).

*The closest would be a ‘messy person’ a-hard-days-night-paul-7

That’s the majority of teachers who teach Irish but the curriculum, itself should take 85% of the blame with 15% being teachers. If you do Higher Level Irish for Leaving Cert you have to write a 500 word essay on stupid topics like ‘Obesity’, ‘Water Charges’, ‘Terrorism’ and stuff like that, that you’d never write about in English let alone Irish! Main problem with it is, is that Irish is taught like English, as if you are a native speaker when 90% of students wouldn’t be.

All the poetry and stories that you do, at least one person has to be killed/commit suicide in it, there is no natural death in the curriculum literature or even *gasp* no death at all- everything is written by a depressed author.

What year is he in if you don’t mind me asking?

Ah bless he’s a first year (I always treat first years as little cute things because they are always titches and they have to carry massive schoolbags so they look dwarfed in comparison to the rest of the students).

Good on him for getting a scholarship, it’s not easy done.

Today I learned that the majority of people in Scotland have blue hair or are stereotyped to have blue hair. Also that Moonlight is a popular name for females and that Scotland has strong diplomatic ties to Sweden.

Also the average Scottish female looks (or is stereotyped to look) like this.
