Today I found out George Harrison was stabbed in 1999.
I also found out I raise my left eyebrow higher than the right.

Today, while compiling my first-spring-breeze playlist, I learned that the Cranberries covered “Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac. It’s not as good as the original, in my biased opinion, but it is funny because Fleetwood Mac and the Cranberries both had (different) hit songs called “Dreams”. I wonder now if the Cranberries titled their song thus as a nod to the Fleetwood one.

I learned The Battle of Evermore on mandolin by ear
When I pulled out the vinyl to listen to the song… the LP was gone! I then freaked out because I thought I lost my LZ IV vinyl… No, I just put it in a David Bowie sleeve about a week ago.

That’s a great song – probably the song that helped me understand just how cool mandolin can sound. I also learned it on mandolin, although I’m too lazy to practice enough to play well.

That song was the reason I bought a mandolin

This is a pretty startling factoid, so much that RN or somebody super-knowledgable may have already posted it elsewhere on the forum, but anyways:
The Isley Brothers’ followup single to their modest hit “Twist And Shout “, was another quickie attempt to capitalize on the “Twist” craze, a track called “Twisting With Linda”. The name was inspired by “Linda”, a recent hit for Jan & Dean, which was itself named for the young daughter of a music industry lawyer whom Jan & Dean were working with…
…and that lawyer was none other than LEE EASTMAN! So, the future Mrs. McCartney had an Isley Brothers- performed song indirectly named for her a full decade before Paul could write one. Remarkable!

Not something I learnt today, but it follows on from quite nicely.
Recorded by Ray Noble and His Orchestra with Buddy Clark, Jack Lawrence’s 1946 song Linda — inspired by the one-year-old daughter of his lawyer, Lee Eastman — topped the Billboard chart in 1947. So the Isleys were quite late to the party, as was Paul, when it came to being inspired by Lee Eastman’s daughter.
It was recorded by others, including Jan and Dean, who released their version as the single before Surf City, with it reaching 28 on the Billboard chart.
So, the lovely Linda never knew a time when songs inspired by her didn’t exist.

Thanks for the full details! I have read about the Ray Noble recording before (possibly in one of Philip Norman’s books) but didn’t know it led to the Isley Brothers involvement. One of those Beatles coincidences…

this is more of a “thing i found out today” but whatever…
I found out that the bass i have wanted for a veryyy long time is in the goof room of my house now! i have to wait till my birthday on april 3rd though. It’s a j-bass like the one paul used.
goof room = a junk drawer, except it’s a whole room. it seems to be unique to my home, but i am sure others have one as well- just not with this beloved name that my step father came up with on the spot.

I just learned it is the 53rd anniversary of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s wedding today (March 20, 2023). I randomly looked up Yoko Ono on Google and looked at news and it said her and John’s wedding was on this day in 1969. Pretty interesting I guess.

15-year old VB thought he was hearing a sitar for many months (“things I learned 30-odd years ago”) …such a great track, those fabulous intertwined throats of Percy and Sandy Denny, acoustic strings falling down like a shower of pine needles…Bring it back, bring it, bring it…
