Here is a very interesting breakdown of the VFX with one of people involved in their creation. He talks about the Howard the Duck insertion.

Where? There doesn’t appear to be any link to a “very interesting breakdown of the VFX”…

A 13-year old schoolgirl, Hazel Hill, helped win the Battle of Britain.

Hazel-Hill.jpgImage Enlarger

Her father was an RAF Scientific Officer, Captain Fred Hill, and was involved in the development of the Spitfire and Hurricane in the mid-’30s, the two planes that won the Battle of Britain.

Originally it was planned both planes would have four guns. Fred wasn’t convinced four guns were enough, and his daughter was a bit of a maths whizz.

Sat with her father at the kitchen table in 1934 she did the maths that showed the 2-second opportunity and that eight guns were needed for the necessary firepower to bring an enemy plane down.

As a result of her calculations Spitfires and Hurricanes were equipped with eight guns instead of four. Eight guns won the Battle of Britain, four would not have been enough, nor the compromise of six.

She also helped with a redesign of the gun sight!

During the war she was a military nurse.

I do love these stories about women who have been unfairly forgotten by history.

The earliest known photograph of someone giving the middle finger is a photograph taken on April 29, 1886 of the Boston Beaneaters and New York Giants baseball teams.  Boston Beaneaters player Charles “Old Hoss” Radbourn is giving the gesture.

The Warner brothers, like many of the early movie moguls, started in the business by owning theaters.  The second theater they owned, named the Bijou, was such a makeshift affair that they initially borrowed ninety nine chairs from the local undertaker with the promise that they would be back in time for the next funeral.

In December 2018, Macaulay Culkin legally changed his name to “Macaulay Macaulay Culkin Culkin” after holding a vote through his website to choose a new middle name, with “Macaulay Culkin” winning the vote over four other candidates.

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8Actually somewhat related to the above post, not today but last week I learned Joe Pesci (Harry in the Home Alone movies) before he became famous as an actor had a music career in the early 60s and also quite famously played a part (heh) in bringing together The Four Seasons by introducing Frankie Valli to Tommy DeVito.

(Yes, I’ve been getting heavily into that group recently. They’re awesome!)

More people have travelled to space (as of January 2018, 556 according to the FAI definition of where space starts, and 562 according to the American definition) than have visited all 198 countries on Earth, which is currently estimated to be between 200 and 250 people.

Probably takes more time to go around the world and if you had the choice who wouldn’t pick going to the moon and being home for a cup of tea and a catch of the tv episodes you’d miss.

Leaving low orbit is different, @meanmistermustard, very different. Only 24 people have left low orbit, and only 12 of those have walked on the Moon. No one has left low orbit since 1972.
