Very interesting thread. Fun to see how much Beatle related things people from the forum see

Yesterday was European Day of Languages’ Day and this is what I learned:
-Greeks are the least-likely European country to know a second language, 50% of their people speak 2+ languages. Ireland are second-last (oops) at 60%. UK and Portugal, third last, with 61% each. Whereas on the other side 98% of Luxembourgians speak a second language. Around 26% of U.S citizens speak a second-language.
-There are 225 indigenous languages in Europe- around 3% of the world’s 6,000 languages.
-The five most widely spoken foreign languages in Europe are English (38%), French (12%), German (11%), Spanish (7%) and Russian (5%).

I learned that life would be a lot simpler if everyone all spoke and wrote in American English.

Pity ye didn’t make-up the language, did ye? If I had my way I wouldn’t be typing in this peasant-tongue right now but seeing as I am, the Queen’s English is the right English!

English has much more of a spread then Irish. When I went to Ireland, I barely heard any Irish.

Up until the early 1800s, Irish was the main-spoken lannguage, then primary schools were banned from teaching Irish by the British government until 1873 but then it was too late 🙁

Hawaii has something like that going on with Hawaiian. If Ireland wants Irish then they gonna have to have Irish be the main language for teaching in schools (unless they already do that)

Some schools teach solely through Irish but unfortunately they’re in the minority. I’m completely with you as regards making schools teach through Irish but the fact is it is taught so badly that a lot of people have a very poor-knowledge as it is quite a difficult language to learn (if you are actually interested in it, it’s reasonably easy- it’s just the genitive case is really difficult) and so they would have to retrain the majority of teachers for however many months it would take them to become good enough to actively treat science, history, geography through Irish.
There are also a lot of people who are actively anti-Irish thinking that it’s going to die-out in the next couple of years (it isn’t) and that it’s a waste of time learning it when we should be learning computer-programming or Mandarin as 6 year olds . It’s as if they want our heritage to die.
The youth would learn English anyways seeing as all the shows we watch are mostly American, British and Australian as well as books and the internet of course!

Maybe have an Irish school with a required English class. Or look at what Israel did. They revived Hebrew.

I learned of a lake in Oregon that drains completely every summer and fills in winter.

We have one quite nearby – Lake George – that drains and fills randomly (it’s on the main highway from here to Sydney). You never know when you drive past whether there will be a nice blue lake there or a soggy paddock with a few confused cows wandering around.

That’s the norm in Arizona. I’ve been in hundreds of homes there and only saw one with a basement. Now you’ve learned something else. You’re welcome.
I learned that relying on other people to get a job done is slightly less favorable than walking barefoot across a bed of broken glass. Delegation is for suckers.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.
