That was because the new films elwere too different and they now wanted to show they could do old star wars before they do anything new.

Continuing my classical kick I just ordered the Beethoven biopic Immortal Beloved on bluray. The film isn’t as good as Amadeus, but Gary Oldman is brilliant in the lead role and the music is nice.
I had a copy on VHS tape years ago but it was stolen in a burglary, the only scene I recall was Oldman lying down looking up at the stars while the Ode to Joy from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony played in his mind. I may be imagining that – we shall see.

If you have a chance let me know how it is (I see Netflix offers it as a DVD option – I’d watch it right now if it was streaming). I’ve enjoyed Gary Oldman in some other movies.
Will do. It should arrive on Tuesday and barring any unexpected life events I’ll watch it sometime in that week.

I just finished watching Immortal Beloved @sigh butterfly and overall I enjoyed it.
It’s a little melodramatic at times, and the Citizen Kane style plot doesn’t entirely work, but I found some moments genuinely moving. The music is magnificent and the production values are high – it works well as period drama; though some of the effects work is a bit slipshod. Oldman is brilliant in the lead role and most of the cast do well enough.
Whether it is worth the purchase is difficult for me to judge for someone else, but I’m glad I bought it – though the reviews at the time were mixed and I can understand why.
Maybe it’s because HKL is so far away at the moment, or maybe I’m an old softie – but I have to admit I shed a tear or three in the final scenes.

Sounds interesting, I’ve added it to my Netflix queue. Btw-Mrs. B is in Japan on business for a few weeks, so I’m in full separation sympathy with you.

And it appears they used still cameras again…yay!!!
Is this another completely unnecessary Hollywood cash grab where they kill off a few more of the characters we like to try and generate some false drama?

Nothing is really needed in the end. Why is killing chars false drama?

Because they often do it to jerk your emotions around rather than it being an integral part of the storyline. Or because they couldn’t convince the actor from the prior film to appear in the new one. I generally hate sequels that come years after the main film for the artificiality that often imbues the plot.
[EDIT] And sometimes it would be nice to have a happy ending stay that way – not ruined to make a few more bucks. I sometimes like my movies to be an escape from the realities of life.

Not sure, trc – I wasn’t invited to the meetings. 🙂
I get what you mean, though. We were thoroughly bummed when…(true spoiler alert ahead for those who have not seen all the movies)
…they killed off Marie in the second movie. Couldn’t believe it.

^ That’s one of the ones that annoyed me, but it’s not the worst. My list is almost endless.
A certain couple breaking up in the Jurassic Park sequels, ditto in the Die Hard films. The old people returning in the Coccoon sequel. What they did in Alien 3. What they are apparently going to do to Will Smith’s character in the next Independence Day. And on it goes …

I have the opposite sometimes characters overstay their welcome and you can tell that the movie shouldn’t have them in it but they have them for the money.
Rotating casts aren’t bad.

I dont have a problem with companies bumping off main characters; keeps interest going and is more realistic than everyone good lives and only ever leave if they get a promotion or married.

It depends on the type of movie. I’m fine with deaths in action movies.
Fun fact: reality is unrealistic.
