The most recent movie I saw was The Island of Dr. Moreau.  The 1970's version starring Michael York, not the more recent Val Kilmer disaster.  It's not great but it's not bad either.  I downloaded it on Netflix because I had just finished reading H.G. Wells' novel.  This is the second time I've read the novel and it's a great book.  Wells liked to frame his novels as statements on human society (and what's so terribly wrong with it).  None of the film versions capture the disturbing nature of the novel.

As an aside, if you're familiar with great debut album by Devo (“Are We Not Men?”), you may want to know that the chant “Are we not men” is taken directly from the animals of Dr. Moreau chanting and reciting the Law that Moreau gave to them.

I see a lot of japanese films, I love how freaky and surreal they are. Inside this general category, we have gore/horror (Audition, Suicide Circle), comedy (Ping Pong, The Taste of Tea), action (Azumi), Drama (All about Lily Chou-Chou) and all the aformentioned genres in one movie 6-hours running (Love Exposure).

Then we have anime, like totally awesome classics like Akira, Ghost in the Shell and pretty much everything from Studio Ghibli.

If you dare, try to watch these movies.

I'd like to say "thank you" on behalf of the group and ourselves and I hope we passed the audition.

I haven't been a movie theatre since that third “Lord of the Rings” thing, of which I only missed about 5 minutes through sleeping, compared to the second one of which I missed 15-20 minutes for the same reason.

More recently, I was all prepared to see “Taking Woodstock” and “A Serious Man” when my DVD player broke a coupla weeks ago. I'll get around to buying another one (my FIFTH in six years for chrissakes!) one of these days.

Back in '92, my sister had that debut album by Irish rappers House of Pain; and that had quite a bit of dialogue from “Moreau”. (“He who breaks the law must go to the House of Pain!”)

I'm not really into anime (I watched Akira a while ago and thought it was awful), but I love Audition, Ichi The Killer and (my favourite Japanese film) Battle Royale. I had a spell a few years back of watching Japanese horror films like Ring and Dark Water. They do them very well.

Japanese schoolgirls with guns – what's not to like? The sequel was rubbish though.

I don't really like western horror films, but Japanese ones have a plus, right? Even advertisings are deliciously absurd. You can see a bunch of them on youtube.

One of my friends says “Japanese people don't have (mental) filters”.

Then you would like to try Totoro, Castle Cagliostro and Nausicaä, my favourites.

Not Ghibli, but quite near to, there you have also:

Makoto Shinkai's films: Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days and  5cm. per second , and

Mamoru Hosoda's The Girl Who Leapt Through Time  and Summer Wars.

I'd like to say "thank you" on behalf of the group and ourselves and I hope we passed the audition.

I'd recommend Tokyo Godfathers. It's a good movie.

I cried at the end of Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, but it was sad. I also a-hard-days-night-john-6cried during Pee Wee's Big Adventure, I was laughing so hard.

You're welcome! You made me remember “Green River” is the first song i learn on guitar, I love that riff.

The director, Satoshi Kon, passed away last August of cancer at very early age. I'm so sad… All his movies are awesome.

Tokyo Godfathers and Millennium Actress are my favourites from Kon, but you also have Perfect Blue (his debut film), Paprika (his last movie) and a TV miniseries called Paranoia Agent.

Don't make me start… I'm warning you, I'm very otaku and I can bore you to death with this stuff… LOL

I'd like to say "thank you" on behalf of the group and ourselves and I hope we passed the audition.

Harry Potter rules! Is there a thread for Harry?

If I seem to act unkind, it's only me, it's not my mind that is confusing things.
