Some of my favorite music came from the late sixties and early seventies, originating in Laurel Canyon. I don’t see much love for CSN, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and a plethora of others. Who are your favorite artists from the canyon?
I’d like to know.

-Bob Dylan, Subterranean Homesick Blues

-Brian Wilson, Surfer Girl

So much great stuff came from the Laurel Canyon musicians and those that were even in their circles and didn’t live there. Flourishing music scene that kind of quieted down in the 80s.
The Byrds, CSN, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, The Mamas and the Papas, Neil Young, Eagles, Jim Morrison / The Doors (and “Love Street” was inspired by Laurel Canyon) , Gram Parsons / Flying Burrito Brothers , Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, The Monkees and more… Loved all of those artists.
Right now I’m reading this book about the Canyon: btkr=1
It’s been QUITE interesting reading.

I’ll have to take a look at that book! All of my the Monterey Pop folks make fantastic music. In fact, I was just listening to Love Street an hour ago.

It’s sprinkled all throughout the Forum – you just have to look for it. Until now, it had not ben concentrated into one thread. I have a feeling @trcanberra will be a frequent contributor.

Just about the first of the Sunset Strip musicians to move to Laurel Canyon was Arthur Lee in 1966.
From there he created his masterpiece…
Probably the first of the “Laurel Canyon” albums, and one of the greatest.

Good call @Zig – I am a BIG Neil Young fan and have every one of his studio and live albums, numerous videos and bootlegs, plus a lot of the CSNY material. I’m not so much of a James and Joni fan but have had a few albums by each over the years. Books of course. Oh, I have some Crazy Horse CDs as well 🙂
I saw Neil and the Horse in Sydney a few years back on the Psychedelic Pill tour and it was a blast.

I’m on a kick on Neil Young right now. From Buffalo Springfeild to his solo years, he put out nothing but gold. The dude was a madman.

Indeed – forgot to mention I have all of their albums as well – plus the Stills-Young band CD etc.
And still is a madman 😉
If you haven’t read it his Waging Heavy Peace book is worth a look.
