Also, I hate this attitude that we “shouldn’t hold it against” people back then for keeping slaves. Slavery was a crime so obviously and explicitly evil, and in plain site, that the only reason it didn’t get abolished earlier was racism and an obsession with profit over everything else. If someone can ever think slavery is okay, I can’t take seriously anything they might have to say. ESPECIALLY when those same people then go on to write a preachy document “for the people, of the people, by the people” talking about how their rights had been violated by the British rulers. The sheer hypocrisy of it is stunning.
Then again, if you properly applied the Nuremberg laws, every post-war US President would probably have been executed for war crimes, so I guess it’s useless trying to salvage any good from that whole thing in the first place.

An important point that is being missed here is that the debate over plastic and reducing its use is about products that are single-use.I haven’t heard of anywhere in the world that is proposing a total ban on the use of plastic to make straws, the bans and restrictions are coming in on plastic straws that are intended to be used only once and then thrown away.
You can compare it to moves against single-use plastic carrier bags (which Ireland led the way on). And, obviously, I’m talking the UK experience here.
Shops used to hand out billions of them here for free every year. In 2015, the law was changed to make larger stores charge for single-use bags. Many of the stores abandoned the cheap plastic bags for slightly more expensive but more durable bags that last longer, others have followed suit, and it is now proposed to extend it to all stores next year.
It makes a difference. I used to walk out of supermarkets laden with throw-away bags, and now I always make sure I have a couple of bags in my pocket when going to the supermarket. My small local “corner-shop” still gives away free bags though and, as a result, I often forget to grab a bag as I rush to make the shop before it closes. I bought two three-litre bottles of drink in there yesterday, had forgot to grab a bag, and they gave me a bag for each.
In six months or so I’ll be charged for those bags, and you can be sure I’ll start remembering to take a bag with me more often than I do.
Though not totally equivalent, it’s easy enough to get reusable straws – including those made of plastic – that to keep giving away single-use plastic straws (estimated UK use of 8.5 billion annually in the fast food industry alone), which are proven to be damaging the environment, is madness.
Great post, it brought up some great points. Still, i wish these changes were by choice instead of force. Or we could do what they did with 6 pack rings and use photo-degradable plastic. This way, the plastic will degrade in sunlight so it won’t be as much of a problem.

Why not just take the far simpler way and ban them.
Because you can say that about a lot of things such as tobacco, alcohol, bottle caps, etc.

Banning tobacco and alcohol is a completely different issue to banning plastic straws, because their impact is social, not environmental. I think they should be kept legal but discouraged, since I do think it’s hypocritical that both are legal when marijuana isn’t, despite being arguably less harmful, particularly in the case of alcohol, which tends to make people belligerent, violent and abusive where marijuana makes people giggly and sleepy.

Yeh, I don’t get why people are like, “*gasp* marijuana!” while going around getting drunk… I don’t have a problem with either, humans like altering their mind, I’m fine with that.

Yes. As long as they’re aware of the effects and consequences (ie, there aren’t any people waving vodka in little kids’ faces and saying “it tastes like candy! it’ll give you magic powers!) people should be allowed to do what they want regarding drugs/smoking/alcohol. Some restrictions would be nice (to prevent people from OD’ing, getting alcohol poisoning, etc, because they don’t know any better) but that’s a choice for people to make for themselves. However, I do understand restrictions on where you can do these things, because things like secondhand smoke and drunk driving affect everybody.

True, but that isn’t considered the main problem it’s associated with.

You did do quite well, I can’t remember any time zones other than Australia…
Sydney is full of conservatives, so perhaps they are so conservative they don’t even want to try out another year?
