I’m pretty sure “Heroes” is my favourite album/era.
The title track is my second favorite Bowie song. It is steeped in symbolism that reminds me of my bride and I when we were just starting out dating and living together in our late teens. There were those who said “we’re nothing and nothing will help us”. Now, 36 years later, “the shame is on the other side”. We beat them, not “just for one day”, but we’ve been heroes “forever and ever”.
“Yes we’re lovers, and that is that”. Man, I get so emotional over that song!!
I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can beat them, just for one day
We can be Heroes, just for one day
And you, you can be mean
And I, I’ll drink all the time
‘Cause we’re lovers, and that is a fact
Yes we’re lovers, and that is that
Though nothing will keep us together
We could steal time, just for one day
We can be Heroes, forever and ever
What d’you say?
I, I wish you could swim
Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim
Though nothing, nothing will keep us together
We can beat them, forever and ever
Oh we can be Heroes, just for one day
I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can be Heroes, just for one day
We can be us, just for one day
I, I can remember (I remember)
Standing by the wall (by the wall)
And the guns shot above our heads (over our heads)
And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall)
And the shame was on the other side
Oh we can beat them, forever and ever
Then we could be Heroes, just for one day
We can be Heroes!
We can be Heroes!
We can be Heroes!
Just for one day
We can be Heroes
We’re nothing, and nothing will help us
Maybe we’re lying, then you better not stay
But we could be safer, just for one day
Oh-oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-oh-ohh
Just for one day

@Zig you and Zag are so sweet, it’s making my teeth ache.
I have a different perspective on the song, but I’ll agree that it’s steeped in symbolism and it definitely is an emotional trip. To me, it’s about loads of things — there are at least five layers of meaning, depending on how you read it; I’m not saying yours isn’t valid, it’s simply one among many —
WARNING: supermassive rant ahead
but I think overall it’s about the human condition, more or less. That’s a stupid presumptuous thing to say, all the best works of art are. Well, I mean we are all the doomed lovers in the song, whose romantic fantasy isn’t even that glorious (‘You could be mean, and I’ll drink all the time, but we’re lovers, and that is a fact’ — more than a little bit disaffected), and whose fantasy gets increasingly obscured by time and reality as the song progresses, until in the last verse the narrator’s up to his neck and drowning — forget about being heroes, we can just be us, that’s enough — but still, barely, making a stand. And that means everything. (Though, by the end, ‘we’re nothing and nothing can help us / Maybe we’re lying..’ to ourselves.)
And that’s basically how life is, in a kind of mocking half-sneer/half-cackle Bowie way, but at the same time glorifying the bittersweetness of reality. We are heroes, though only in our fantasy, only for one day, one brief lifetime — but one day is forever when it’s all you’ve got, and just by virtue of being us, just for one day, we are heroes forever.
Or something like that. It’s a beautiful song and my bloviating hardly does it justice.
But anyway, the rest of the album is great too! I love ‘Blackout’. And the opening and closing tracks, and the whole instrumental suite thing. And ‘Joe the Lion’ and errrrrrrr what can I say I love the whole thing, it’s so arty and dense and unappealing that it’s appealing somehow.
And don’t get me started on the album cover!

Whilst in the depths of the coldest winter here for some years, i have:
* got a new kitten who is a scamp but very loveable
* got a new graphics card for the gaming eye candy
* upgraded to a shiny new 4tb hard drive.
I have to pay bills all July so I won’t be continuing my program of major acquisitions until August. Top of the list is furniture, and the repairing of furniture.
Ok, I’ll admit it: I’ve been watching the World Cup. By a stroke of good fortune for me and not for a certain greedy telco buying up the rights, said telco utterly failed to come up with the goods for subscribers so the coverage has gone back to lovely SBS (TV public broacaster) who are football-mad anyway, and telco has to refund everyone. Telco bought the rights from SBS in the first place, so well done there. Just hilarious that SBS has better online access to the matches than the telco.

I live inland so Friday was -2.6c. I’m a bit northern for the snow, which usually crosses the state and falls on the eastern mountains, but oddly it’s not really happening this winter, despite awful winds and iced-up surfaces.

I wish I could! Not even our politicians hang around in the winter, can’t blame them because Canberra is horrifyingly cold right now.

Lousia May Alcott had it Englishers. Of course, she was American (and a Yankee to boot ) and that was ~150 years ago…

Englishers isn’t really used by us, @Beatlebug, as we generally use English as the plural, or Englanders. More common than either though is British as that includes the Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish as well (though those of a more nationalistic persuasion among those often object to being referred to as British).
The most common usage of Englisher is actually among the Amish in your country who use it to describe anyone who isn’t Amish.
On the temperature front, last Thursday saw the highest temperature ever recorded in Scotland. 33.2 C in Motherwell.

That’s one bit of summer I don’t miss – the sub-40C temperatures!
Good anecdote about Scotland to prove global warming. A shame but nevertheless true.
