The BBC report thatRihanna has beaten Michael Jackson’s top 10 US singles record, with her new song Love on the Brain.
It’s her 30th single to get into the top of the Billboard chart and means she sits only behind The Beatles and Madonna, who is eight ahead on 38…
It’s taken her 10 years, seven months and two weeks to achieve the latest milestone, an average of three hit songs a year…
The Beatles managed it in a mere five years, nine months and two weeks – nearly half the time it took Rihanna.
I don’t know the figures but I bet The Beatles had to sell a lot more records to get to number one than an artist would have to today.

What I always find interesting, and the telling detail, when you start looking at stats like the amount of #1s at the top of the tree, is the % of singles that reached that peak. As an example, Elvis and The Beatles topped the UK list for #1s until the late 1990s, both with 17 #1s based on singles released prior their finish as recording acts.
The Beatles achieved their 17 #1s with the release of 22 singles, now I don’t know what that is %-wise, but must be 85%+, while it took Elvis over a hundred singles in the UK before he reached his 17th #1, and that was the ironic Way Down off of the back of his death, which would give Elvis a #1 rate of between 10 and 15% of his single releases.
So, Elvis has added a #1 or two to his tally, giving him the most UK #1s, but the stats show The Beatles as far more successful on the % of releases to reach the pole position.

It’s a strange thing sales. Records back in 60’s could sell hundreds of thousands and fail to get reach number one whereas today half the amount would get you there.

Who’s interested to be in my ‘mailing list’? (Thanks WeepyC!)I am! You probably knew that, though.
Awesome!
Sidenote: Erm, perhaps we should move this discussion to the Impossible to Derail thread. I think this particular thread has been thoroughly derailed.
Moved! Sorry mods for derailing that thread so badly over the last couple of days.
Anyone else?

What types of audio and video formats do or have you owned, whether currently or in he past, for me, here’s a list:
Audio:
Radio (Never been without it)
Vinyl (Always had it)
Cassette (first got in 1977)
Quality sucks when compared to vinyl but they make great mixtapes
[Image Can Not Be Found]
CD (first got in 1989)
Bought a stolen player
Video:
TV (not a format, but worth a mention, my parents got their first color TV on December 25th, 1966)
Super 8 (via Kenner Movie Viewer, first got in 1977)
Owned Star Wars and Alien tapes
VHS (first got in 1982)
My parents got it as a Christmas present for me with a copy of Star Wars
[Image Can Not Be Found]
Laserdisc (first got in 1985)
I stole it from a department store where I was working at the time
[Image Can Not Be Found]
DVD (first got in 2000)
Both:
Internet (not technically a format, but it’s worth a mention, first got in 1997)

@sir walter raleigh and @ewe2, you’re on the list as well! I didn’t think I would garner that much interest, to be completely honest.
As for your question, @HMBeatlesfan:
Audio: An mp3 player, a record player and a cd player that now no longer works.
Video: DVD player, PS3, Storage drive that is compatible with our TV.
Both: Internet, computer, phone

To answer HMBeatlesfan’s question:
Audio: iPod, record player, a stereo that plays both CDs and cassettes, and an 8-track player that may or may not work.
Video: DVD player, and a TV/VCR combo where the VCR part unfortunately doesn’t work for some reason.
Both: phone, computer, Internet.

Audio:
Cassette (I have a dual player/recorder that can dub to computer via USB cable
Vinyl – a straightforward player with rca outs so i can digitize via USB interface
Sony Discman, which plays standard CDs and also data mp3 and other formats within prescribed limits (IIRC it hates VBR and anything over 320 kbits/s)
Various defunct or discarded mp3 players (i have 3 ipods of different generations that are effectively dead)
and my phone of course (have several discarded phones, I’m sure we all do)
Video:
VHS/CD player but I’ve misplaced the remote which is a bit annoying, so I don’t use it.
LCD TV which can do USB input, composite (eg Xbox), the usual stuff.
Canon SLR camera which can technically do video.
A cheapass Kodak point and shoot which CLAIMS to do video but hahaha no.
Both:
Computers. I have a few. Some of them are old like the C64 and the O2.
The interwebs of course.
Technically, do game consoles count? xbox360, gamecube, they can both do video not associated with games.
