Oh, my, @BluemeanAl. I hope your luck turns around soon so you can start singing “It’s getting better all the time”.
I don’t sew, and I don’t want to end up paying money to someone to add pockets to an item of clothing that *should have* pockets right off the rack. JUST SAY NO to pocketless garments. Boycott, I say! Hit them in their bottom line. That’ll teach ’em.
I am cleaning out and organizing my work email account. Endorphin release. Ahhhhhhhh…..

Here is a question. It’s Record Store Day tomorrow. Those of my generation remember the first record we bought. There was something special about the act. Though I had records and cassettes gifted me beforehand, I always remember that first single I went out and bought for myself. My choice!
It was, ironically or sadly depending on the view, (Just Like) Starting Over on December 5th 1980. I’d been given a Buddy Holly compilation, 20 Golden Greats, and John reminded me of Buddy. Jesus! When I bought that single I didn’t realise just what a pivotal moment in my life that was. It was the beginning of something that changed my life.
Do our youngsters, who mainly download, have the same sort of memory of their first mp3?

i saw a syd barret poster where he was playing at the ufo, and so i googled syd barret, and paid 10$ for piper at the gates of dawn on itunes. that’s the first mp3 i bought with my own money, however, my dads music collection consisted of cds, mp3s and lps, and the majority of my beatles, simon and garfunkel, etc is from my dad. piper is all me.
the first record i bought was the deliverance soundtrack. i remember that well, even though i bought it in the 21st century

Actually, I only get downloads if I think I’ll want to listen to them on the go, and I don’t really put any importance on them. I personally believe that it’s very hard to attach or keep sentimental value to any album/song/etc that’s not in a physical form, if that makes any sense at all (it probably doesn’t, but I find that my personal opinions are usually not “popular” ones and are difficult to explain). So, anyways, I don’t really have any memory of my first Mp3. Although, I do have a memory of the first cd that I personally chose.
T’was a day a few years ago (in October I believe). I was out shopping with my family and we decided to look at a music store. I found two CDs that I wanted (I couldn’t remember what the other one was for the life of me), but I could only get one. I thought for a moment and finally decided. So, we went up to the till to pay for it.
The cd was the 2009 remastered version of The Beatles 1967-1970.
You see, the reason I bought this particular cd was because I had noticed a song on it called Here Comes The Sun ; and this particular song I remembered hearing somewhere before and really enjoying it.
When we arrived home that day I put the second disk in my stereo and skipped straight to the eighth track. Man, I must have played it at least 40-50 times, but I enjoyed listening to the lyrics, the drums, the guitar, the everything each and every time I heard it; from that iconic acoustic guitar Intro to the final acoustic guitar bits at the end and back. I didn’t even listen to the other songs on the album for about a week after that.
I then began to explore the Beatles’ other work, themselves, and their story as much as I could. I suppose, in other words, I worked on becoming the best fan that I could possibly be.
And so, here we are now, with a most definitely more Beatley and just perhaps a little more grown-up WeepingAtlasCedars. A Beatlemaniac now, and a Beatlemaniac I plan to stay. And, I think it’s safe to say, that for me, Here Comes The Sun and The Beatles 1967-1970 were (respectively) the song and album that started it all for me. Without them, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Not a Beatles fan; not a classic rock fan; and even not a person passionate about, well, their passions! I wouldn’t even really have passions, actually.
Even to this day, I still play Here Comes The Sun more than any other song from any of my CDs. (In fact, I’m listening to the tune on repeat right now! )
Anyways, sorry for the long post (I thought that I might as well tell the whole story in one go); and I suppose that’s my memory of my first cd!
Finally, I’d like to thank @Ron Nasty for rekindling the memory with his post. An apple for you, sir!

Sorry about that. I would have, had I thought of a way to post it both here and there (but not everywhere!) and also had I known that that thread existed in the first place.

Thanks for that reply, @WeepingAtlasCedars.
I think it is an interesting question. The way that buying music has changed, and how it sits in the memory.
Was your first mp3 before or after your first CD?

It makes perfect sense.
I enjoy reading stories like that. It takes me back to when I was a kid. Whenever I went with my folks to a department store, I made a beeline directly to the record department. The racks full of 45’s would mesmerize me. I would pick up and read as many labels as I could before mom & dad came to collect me and they always bought me one. Deciding which one would be thrilling and the disc was a badge of pride – I would hold it and read it all the way home. Try doing that with an MP3.
Long live Record Store Day.

The first CD I bought, I was 7ish so this was around 2005 and it was ‘The Essential Michael Jackson’- bloody great album, it picks highlights off each of his album from the early Jackson 5 days to his last album before he died ‘Invincible’.
It doesn’t just have the Number One’s, but also the great songs that he isn’t really remembered for like ‘Who Is It?’ off ‘Dangerous’ and ‘You Rock My World’ off ‘Invincible (which is one of my favourite MJ songs along with Liberian Girl and Dirty Diana off ‘BAD’).
If you want to listen to a good MJ compilation don’t get ‘Number Ones’ get ‘The Essential’, it’s a much better and greater span of his career.

In addition to my Springsteen show getting cancelled last week, Cirque dead Soleil just pulled the plug on their NC shows, so that’s another ticket down the tubes for the Bluemean household.
I’ve tickets for Hard Working Americans in May, Dead & Company in June, and Tedeschi Trucks Band in July. I am very much NOT hoping for a clean sweep!

Well, maybe what we will hope for at this moment in time is that it can’t get worse for you and the Bluemean household. Hopefully you aren’t hiding your head in the sand yet.
