Several folks know my contact info at home and at work. If I disappear for too long, someone could follow up if they wanted to.

@Joe, does Ellie still have the keys to the site in case you meet a sticky end? https://www.beatlesbible.com/f…..e-6/#p3143

She has admin rights to the site and forum, so could edit, add to and delete bits of the site if she wanted (though thankfully doesn’t).

She doesn’t have direct access to the server, which contains all page templates, images and other files which turn the raw database into something comprehensible. I’m the only one who can log in to the server (SFTP/WHM/phpmyadmin etc). It’s also my credit card that pays for the hosting, so if I go the site goes too. I should really share the passwords and access info but I’ve yet to come up with a secure enough solution. I can’t exactly write it all down on a bit of paper or put it in a Dropbox file, can I? Too much at stake.

It’s something I’ve given thought to. There’s nobody in my family who can effectively manage this site, and it’s all a bit complicated – I have half a dozen email addresses for administering various bits of the site (eg advertising, communications, hosting). That’s mainly because the site grew beyond my initial expectations, so when I set up Amazon ads (for example) I used my normal Amazon login rather than a new @beatlebible address. A further complication is that I use two-factor authentication on some of the accounts, so someone would need my phone to get in.

I should really tie it all together and simplify.

ahdn_paul_06 Maybe give the password to Ellie so that when you die, she can transfer the ownership of the site to someone else

But there are various passwords and accounts. Off the top of my head, these are the essential ones:

  • WordPress administration
  • Hosting company (to pay the bills and get tech support)
  • Server (SFTP)
  • PHPMyAdmin (to edit the MySQL database)
  • Google Adsense
  • Amazon Associates (I have at least six accounts with different international stores)
  • PayPal
  • iTunes (I can’t even remember the name of the third-party company that provides their affiliate links)
  • GeoRiot (which geo-targets the Amazon and iTunes ads to serve up the nearest to people around the world)
  • WordPress.com (to get certain services such as stats working)
  • Mailserver

I’m not going to have the same password for all of these services, so there’s a lot to remember. I could share access with someone else I trusted (immediate family), but unless they used them regularly I’d be surprised if they could remember all the details. So that leaves writing them down which makes me uneasy.

And even if they had all those account details, there’s no way anyone I know would be able to make changes if certain things broke (eg Amazon change their advert code, which happened last week and required a plugin replacement and sitewide find/replace of some code). Fortunately the site runs fairly smoothly most of the time, so things don’t need changing often.

Oh well, it’s only a website. And besides, I’m not planning to check out any time soon. a-hard-days-night-ringo-14

I like how we’re just casually talking about Joe’s death- Joe I’ll happily take all of the passwords, if due to some unforeseen circumstances I am actually put in charge of this website it would probably crash and burn in about 2 days tops, so there’s a bit of a warning.

This awful weather is driving me crazy. Ever since I came back from holidays (nearly a month ago) it has rained every. single. day, we have only had one actual day where there was sunshine. Every other day has just been cloudy and utterly depressing, it’s driving me demented. I don’t remember any other July ever being this bad but good God it’s awful- I’m wearing heavy jumpers and trousers/tights every day- it’s taking the mick so it is!

We have to have disaster plans at work, and we have to test them.

@Joe’s death would definitely be a disaster for many reasons, one of them being the possible end to this website. It is an important place on the ‘net. I think we should all pitch in and get a secure lock box in a Swiss bank for the passwords to the site.

Well, hopefully, @Joe can struggle through until the end of the month, @Zig! And, even if he can’t, the site should stagger on for at least a few weeks after his untimely demise. It’s only got to make until the 30th for all results to be posted, so either way we should be fine on that score. a-hard-days-night-george-10

Hey Joe,

As long as moderate mods survived………Couldn’t you entrust someone from ‘corporate’ or ‘family’ Beatles?

Obviously no one with anything to do with Yoko……..or perhaps even Sean as things would certainly get skewed in one way or another. Stella loves her dad too much.

…..But George and Ringo are less divisive figures ………Dhani comes to mind as someone who could be relied upon. He’d have someone working for him that could handle administrative duties.

Failing ‘family’ because of impartiality concerns….then Apple. This is a precious web site. It would be in their interest to support and continue the site. I think you’d have a pretty strong hand Joe.

There’s a lot at stake here. Not least of course, the potential loss of the wisdom of Wigwam and the authoritative text of that, ‘drip under pressure’…..Exspurt Textspurt…….Just joshing. There really is a treasure trove of information on here……. and somehow love has been created too. Whatever spats occur the Beatles bind and unite us.

Hopefully you’re a youngster Joe and have as many years ahead of you as that other Biblical figure….Methuselah.

Anyway something you might consider if you haven’t already.
