When I purchased my copy of B.B. King’s autobiography, I found this picture of this fine fellow between the pages. I have no idea who he is, but “July 1991” is written on the back.
How interesting, I’ve got loads of second-hand books from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s and a lot of them have little notes inscribed like “To Hazel, Happy Christmas and all the best for 1978, from Auntie Joyce” and I always wandered what happened to those people. I got an old copy of ‘East of Eden’ from 1964 in a 2nd hand book shop and found a note from one of the maths teachers in my school in it that was dated ‘1968’.
It’s really cool when you find them gives a quirky and unique aspect to the book.

Reminds me of buying used books for college. Here’s one that I got in college.

I like the next sentence: “Joe lit a cigarette and crossed his legs and watched us.” Our Joe doesn’t smoke, but I can picture him crossing his legs and watching us on his iPad.

Years ago, when we were living in Arizona, Zag bought an incredibly gaudy painting at an estate sale just because she loved the frame. When she got it home, we took the backing off, hoping to get rid of everything except the frame. Underneath the painting was a 99 year old document which was the charter for some type of paranormal society (I wish I could remember the name of the group – she can’t remember either). These being the days before everybody had at least 7 electronic devices, we looked up the society in the phone book (anybody remember those?). We found a listing for the society and called them to let them know what we had found. An older couple invited us to their home to see the document first hand and make us an offer on it. At the risk of being turned into newts, we went to their house and ended up selling the yellowed charter to them. They were still an active society and were getting set to celebrate 100 years of existence. Having the charter to present at the convention meant so much to those folks. It was really cool to know we helped them out. We still have the frame, and it now holds a personally autographed copy of a cool western print from a cowboy artist that Zag met at an office where she used to work. Oh…we also have a cool story to break out at parties. Life is good.

Did you find out what kind of paranormal society it was when you talked to those people? I’d like to know more…

I bought a used album on eBay several years ago called Bloomington 1, a 1975 compilation of local acts from Bloomington, Indiana (including the “famous” MX-80 Sound, whose song “Myonga Von Bontee” obviously meant a lot to me) and was intrigued to find just such a note written on the inner sleeve:
To David, whom I met & loved in Bloomington –
Moving on – once again.

David
Very mysterious…
(That’s an amazing story, @Zig !)

What is that some people can somehow get a hold of you and be able to ask something of you that you cannot do in the slightest yet it still bugs you that you cant?
A general rambling incoherent thought that i’m not expecting any insight to.

I never keep a book if it has been written in, unless by the author.

@Oudis The missus took a picture of it before we sold it. Now, if we can remember where the photo albums are… If we find it, or remember the name (HA!), I will be sure to update you.
Before we sold it, we did take it to an appraiser. He basically told us it wasn’t worth the paper it was printed on and to save our money on the appraisal. That was cool because he could have just as easily taken our money. It was his suggetion that we try to see if the organization was still active as it would be worth something to them. He was right. So, not knowing anything about this type of transaction, we had no idea what to ask for. I figured whatever they offered, I would counteroffer. They said $25. I BS’d them by saying we were thinking $100 but would take $75. Done and done. We saved money on the appraisal and went out to dinner with the 75 clams. By the way, she only paid $10 for the frame!

@Zig, here’s a list of paranormal societies in Maine along with a city listed for each one. Maybe that will help.

My father has/had tons of letters going back to the 1800’s, we have no idea what to do with them. The thinking is he got them for the postmarks/seals that came on them.
Maybe ask at a museum or historical society? Someone at Kelvingrove might have other ideas?

I’m already thinking it was a Satanic cult, or a Apocalyptic Christian sect… It would be soooo cool!
