Just got the shock of my life as I discovered one of my online pals has never heard “Yesterday “!!!!! And she’s not exactly uncultured swine, either, it’s not like she only listens to modern pop or whatever kids these days listen to; she knows the Beatles a bit, she knows some classic rock although she’s more into weird indie bands from the late 70s, but somehow never heard the #1 most covered song of all time.

I am playing with Stable Diffusion AI image generator tonight and decided to try John Lennon as one of the prompts.

When people resurrect older threads, I wonder if I’m going to enjoy what I wrote in years past or if I’m going to cringe in horror at my ramblings.

I know I’m going to cringe most of the time because I made so many posts on this forum when I was like 16
occasionally, though, I read an old post I made and think, hey, that’s pretty cool. I stand by that.

@Sea Belt
@Neely came up for me just now in the dropdown name menu. I’ve noticed that the list populates slowly sometimes. Try doing the @ for Neely again in this thread.

I’m going to do the impossible…. and that is to derail this thread.
I want to be a musician. I’ve been playing music since I was 5 years old (so like 8 years now) and still my family members still say “you’ll quit in a year or two” or “oh, I wish Neely would just realize it’s impossible for him to do it.” And every time I call a distant family member, they’ll ask “Are you still playing your guitars?” like my family is anticipating the day I stop. The reason I don’t play gigs as much as I want to is because people will always say things like “You’re going to be the next Taylor Swift!” which disgusts me because they see me as a girl, but also is off-putting because I play classic rock, blues, and jazz… where did Taylor Swift come from? Another thing people at gigs say after I preform is “You should go on America’s Got Talent or American Idol.” No, I’m not going on a staged reality TV show to start my career and then be known for it. I just wish I could be taken seriously with my passion and it not be a thing that’s just a cute phase because I’m still a kid. Because of things like this I can’t get started with my career and being taken seriously, despite me having multiple opportunities to start my career already.
I’m also terrified for high school and I’m not afraid to admit it. I’m going there later this year, but I don’t know what I am doing at all. My mom dropped out at the beginning out 9th grade because she got pregnant with me, and I have no clue where my dad is. So, at this point in 8th grade I can’t go to my mom asking for advice in high school, because she didn’t do it herself. A couple nights ago she told me “You’re on your own now with education and I can’t guide you in which classes to take, or how to graduate, ect.” This was some of the most terrifying information I’ve ever received, even though my mom has never really helped me with school before anyway. But the fact these four years will get me into college and will decide what I do for the rest of my life scares me. I know I want to go to college for music, but what if I don’t get accepted, then my life would just go to waste and I’d be unhappy and disappointed in myself. I feel that I have my entire life in front of me and nobody to guide me in the right direction. I’m passionate about my education, career, and accomplishing my dreams, but what if I mess everything up and how do I avoid doing so?
I don’t know why I worry so much, I’m not a bad student at all. My lowest grade on the last report was a 94 (A) in math.
I’m sorry to anyone who just read all that, you didn’t have to.

Well you certainly sound like a person with conviction and determination for music, and that’s half the battle. It would be nice if you could find some mentors who have at least one foot in the Biz. We often read about other famous musicians from the old days who got their break by taking their guitar to various clubs and trying to squeeze in a minute on stage, and then eventually someone like Bo Diddley or Chuck Berry might be in the club, or one of their managers, and see this kid performing and say “hey you want to come back next week we’ll give you a gig”. It’s probably unrealistic to expect that but you’ll never know unless you try it out.
I’m thinking because of your geographical location I think you said Mississippi, that isn’t so far from Nashville, is it? Also your profile says you actually did a recording stint in Nashville. Often young people who wanted to start out in the music business would go to some Mecca like New York, LA or Nashville. Even though Nashville is known for country music and that may not be your specialty, there are plenty of talent scouts and musicians there who are sophisticated enough to know about other genres and can tell when someone has talent, even if it’s in other genres.
At your age you have many years ahead of you, I would say just go to high school and think of it as a normal process you have to go through and just take all the usual classes, meanwhile keep your eye on music and keep practicing and trying to play with other people. In the meantime slowly plan to go back to Nashville, maybe just visit again sometime in the next year or so to get a handle of it, and then think about taking some time off either towards the end of your high school years, or right after graduation at age 18, to try out that scene. Not everyone goes straight to college right after high school. Some people wait a couple of years while they get their stuff together.

The thing is is my family doesn’t think I can do it so I can’t go to gigs even though I live in Memphis and I’m surrounded by what I want to do with my life I can’t. Nashville is 4 hours away and Memphis is 10 minutes away. I only went to Nashville because at the time I still lived with both of my great-grandfathers on my dad’s side, but they both died a while ago. Now that they’re gone, I only have my mom’s side who says “I want you to do something better with your life” and being a kid everything I do goes through them, so there is no chance of me going to even watch a gig. Unless I run away… oh yeah I tried that once and got arrested.
